If you are reading this community without having joined it, you have to solve a CAPTCHA (retype some semi-legible words) in order to leave a comment here. We have this setting turned on in order to discourage spambots.

According to several commenters in this post, LJ has recently broken this in a way that prevents some people from leaving reply comments in the proper thread. They now have to leave only top-level comments, which can disrupt the flow of the conversation and doesn't notify people that they have been replied to.

If you are a regular reader and participant here, please avoid this problem by joining the community. Thanks!

Just noticed that Somerville is having an electronics recycling event on Nov. 10 from 9 am to noon. They're accepting a wide variety of computers, personal electronics, and small household appliances. They'll even have someone there to wipe the hard drive of any computers you want to ditch!

Details here (pdf link).

Hi everyone. As promised I wanted to mention my business that I am opening up at 862 Broadway (at Powder House Circle) , in the space that was previously Mass Metta Massage. My website can be found here.

More information below for those who would like it! )

I have a hearing coming up this Wednesday, November 7th with the ZBA for the change of use of my space from Medical Massage to Personal Training, as well as the often discussed Parking Waiver. The staff report is quite favorable, but if you'd like to stop by, I'd always appreciate the support. After that point, hopefully I can apply for my Certificate of Occupancy (at risk for 20 days) and have a grand opening at the beginning of December which I'd love to see you all at. I'm very excited to be opening my own business in the Somerville/Davis area, and look forward to hopefully having some of you as clients!

I noted with interest that DSLJ is hosting a discussion of the local ballot questions.  Thanks for doing this.

I also wanted to share a message I just sent to local media outlets that may be of interest to this group:

By every indication (total registered voters, total absentee ballots requested, total window traffic) the 2012 election cycle here in Somerville is on track to meet or exceed the historic levels of the 2008 election.
As you know, however, Superstorm Sandy (or Hurricane Sandy, or Tropical Storm Sandy, or whatever the heck that was), has interrupted our normal pre-election operations and compressed the amount of time we have to get information out to voters.  That’s especially worrisome  given the fact that we have seven questions on this year’s local ballot in addition to an array of federal, state and  county offices .
Given the amount of official information needed to understand, and decide on, all those state and local ballot questions, and given the expected high turnout on Tuesday  (which is, of course, a wonderful thing and the kind of problem we want to have), I have posted a homepage alert on the City website that provides information about:
1. Volunteering at the polls on Election Day.
2. If possible, learning about the ballot questions before coming to polls and stepping into the voting booth.
3. If possible, voting at off-peak hours.
Many of your organizations have already published valuable voter guides or other official information in both your print and online editions.  I’m hoping you will add our information to the mix and give it as much visibility as possible.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Thomas P. Champion

I just got back from my local Foodmaster's (Fellsway West and Salem Street, Medford) and it also, sadly, had the omnious STORE CLOSING banner, everything 10% off, sadness.  Employees told me that TODAY (Nov 2) they got word that Stop and Shop had bought the leases of the remaining Foodmasters that Whole Foods didn't want.  One employee (a newer clerk) said he wasn't so sure that a new Stop and Shop store would open in that location, he thought that it was likely they bought the lease just so competition didn't buy it.  Another employee (a long term employee) said she was absolutely certain, because it was in the memo she got, that Stop and Shop was indeed opening in all the locations, and all Foodmaster employees had jobs at this new store, all they had to do was to run through the application.

So the word is varied, but the consensus is that Stop&Shop at least bought the leases.

I'm in need of new tires and the specific ones I want are not carried locally. Places I have called can order them, but have all quoted me $550 - $600. I can order them direct for $318. If I purchase them does anyone know of a garage that will install them for me, or do most places only install the tires they sell? Thanks for any insight!
