Since it does appear that only mods can generate new tags for now, just give me a list of tags you want or anticipate needing, and I'll create them. We can add to the list periodically as necessary.
Some tags I would have used, if they had been available:
MBTA (I used "public services" instead) restaurants (I used "local businesses" instead)
If you add these two, I'll retag all of the approriate posts.
I'm not sure what "public services" are -- do you mean government or non-profit services, or does this also include things like cell-phone service?
It would be nice to have a catch-all tag for things like laundry, dry cleaning, shoe repair, tailors, and the like. But I'm not sure what to call this.
Another could cover medical, dental, optical, podiatry, chiropractic, etc. -- again, I'm not sure what a good catch-all name would be.
Maybe "transit" would be better than MBTA, to cover all discussions of transportation, not just the T?
I imagine we might want the tags to be fairly broad categories, to avoid having to have fifty zillion tags for slightly different things.
Since you pay for cell-phone service through private companies, it certainly wouldn't qualify as "public service" But it might help for the mods to make a meta post explaining their ideas for the tags they end up with.
Maybe a catch-all for laundry, etc would just be "business services"?
For that last one, I think "medical" works nicely.
This FAQ may be helpful. It looks like you (the mods) can define different groups, some of which can create new tags and others of which can only use existing tags.
"Community maintainers can also change the tag permission settings to allow certain groups of users to create new tags, and add or remove tags from existing entries." (http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=230&view=full).
I maintain a book review community and members tag the books by genre at their leisure and by what seems most appropriate to them. Check out thatbooklist.
