i get 1 eye exam a year paid by my insurance, and i really need a new prescription for my contacts.
last year i went to a dim place on highland ave. in somerville, the guy barely listened to me, examined me and then told me that i was wrong and i didn't need a new prescription.
now i really need one.

anyone have recs for a trustworthy opthamologist/eye doctor/eye place that will listen to me and be thorough?

near Davis/Porter/Harvard preferred.

Thanks.

I think this has been discussed before but not recently. Parelli Optical at 1 Porter is quite good.

I agree ... I've used Parrelli Optical for years. Good guys.

I've found that the optometrists that work with For Eyes Optical are always great. I've been to quite a few locations and they've been wonderful. Plus, with For Eyes, you get two complete pairs of glasses (in case you need a backup) for $99!

For Eyes in Harvard Square is also my favorite place. Though my insurance now has a special program where I can get free glasses at Cambridge Eye Associates. So I'm planning on trying them out sometime soon.

i've used scott sylvia at general optical (corner of mass ave and creighton street, across from the fire station) and been pleased. their glasses are kind of pricey, but the exam and workup is good.

Ditto this. He's thorough, attentive, friendly and efficient.

Assuming quality is more important than location, I'll mention For Eyes at 222 Newbury St., Boston -- which is near the Hynes stop on the Green line.

The Opthamologist there, Dr. Stacy Schrader, is very friendly and knowledgeable, and was quite willing to discuss the biology of my vision situation. What won my top-most marks however was that she made (it seemed to me) a masterful decision about my perscription that has freed me from chronic eye-strain.

Aside: her decision was to reduce the difference between the near and far regions of my progressive lens perscription, a significant shift from the classical progressive conclusion for my vision tests. This allows me to use the progressives at the computer without distortion, and my eyes don't get strained from adjusting to everyday distance after a computer workday anymore.

I'd brought that complaint to several prior Opths and gotten tweaks but no substantial results, so this was a big win.

The For Eyes Optometrist also won my loyalty with a highly skilled eyeglass fitting (I have an odd head), and her thorough knowledge of the frames options (she recommended a frame not in stock at the store that hit my imprecisely described requirements on the button).

I'll put in another nice word for Four Eyes in Harvard Square. They've always done a careful and thorough job of checking the fit of my contacts and discussing changes in my prescription with me, and on my most recent visit the optometrist (whose name is sadly currently escaping me) also put extra effort into adjust my glasses and contacts prescription so that the difference in the astigmatism correction between the two no longer irritates me immensely every time I switch between them. (I'd gotten to the point of refusing to wear the glasses if at all possible because the change was so annoying.)

(They also have a nifty new gadget for checking one's field of vision, though there's an extra fee for that.)

I like the optometrists in the Harvard Vanguard building on Holland.
