[personal profile] ron_newman posting in [community profile] davis_square
When trying to deliver your message, the mail server at thecia.net encountered permanent problems with the following address:
For <davis_square@aaaaa.org>, the destination server said: 5.1.1 <davis_square@aaaaa.org>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table (from aaaaa.org:199.201.145.108)

This is what I was trying to send:

What is happening with the reorganizing of tags and memories in the [livejournal.com profile] davis_square community? I'd like to help but I don't know what you want me to do, and when. [livejournal.com profile] elements is also interested. Click on "tags" for earlier recent discussion of this subject. See also the last few comments here, and once again here.

It appears my mail server's address configuration file reverted to an older version, though I don't know when or why. Because it only affected a few addresses, I didn't notice. I've restored it from a recent backup, and davis_square@aaaaa.org should be working again.

But, this is a reasonable thing to post about here, anyway, so people can discuss.

tagging and a call for changes

I'm also willing to help out with some tagging.

We've recommended several changes, and right now we're waiting for you, the moderators, to decide how you'd like to handle the issues raised, and take an active role in the solution.

Ron and I spoke with [livejournal.com profile] cos the other day, since we were all at a meeting together anyway. Cos agreed that, if we provide a list of recommended new tags, the mods will get it implemented. I've been working on the list already. Want to send me your suggestions if you have any?

I also want to see some tags consolidated (ie restaurants + dining) or renamed to become more specific (which might then require going back and editing things tagged in those categories (ie local food --> local food shopping or similar). I don't think the consolidation is possible at this time without a lot of manual labor from the mods so I think that's off the table. But renaming may be possible if it's worth us volunteering to clean up the back-tags. So if you have suggestions on those lines too feel free to include.

If I was cos (or had cos' ear :) I'd do the following:

  • Put "please tag your posts" in the guidelines so new people reading about the community in userinfo see it. We can't expect them to know to tag if it's not mentioned! Have a link to the list of tags.
  • Change the Davis Square template to one with a tag-cloud (like [livejournal.com profile] food_porn.
  • Consider opening up tagging to everybody.

hmm.... more specific tags: dining, yoga, housing,

get rid of: "civic" (too vague), local food (too vague)

Is there a way to view the current list of tags? That'd make giving suggestions easier!
If you'd rather contact me directly, email me at splendid_metaphor AT yahoo.

Excellent. Maybe we (and anyone else on the tag team) could get together and chat about it all sometime, or do a round of emails, etc. I'm just back from a lot of being out of town, but I'll go dig up my list of suggestions from before.

Oh also, I would be happy to, in a few weeks once some further insanity and out-of-town-ness in my life has cooled down, to take on a chunk of time to go through tagging, and/or to go through after we revamp the tag system to update older posts with more info.

One thing I think that might be useful would be to have a main tag organization post that has descriptions of the intention of each of the tags, and to organize their naming (and therefore presentation) by categories. That way someone could always check the main tag post to determine which tags best suit their posting. I think it might be nice to have a higher level of precision of tags available, so that there'd be less likelihood of getting hundreds of returns on a search.
