The Somerville Arts Council is conducting a survey on the city's creative community and they could use your help.  They're even sweetening the deal - complete the survey and you'll be entered to win one of four $50 Amazon gift cards.

From the Somerville Arts Council:

Much of our success at the Somerville Arts Council is contingent on our listening to the creative community in Somerville. Our programming seeks to reflect the rich cultural diversity of the City and the artists, designers, and performers who have made it home. Similarly the policies we push at the City level attempt to be responsive to the needs of local artists.

As Somerville approaches a crossroads in terms of the type of change and development it expects, we need to develop surveys and reports to understand the needs of the creative community and identify points of leverage for policy intervention. Toward that goal, we are launching an asset survey and analysis with UMass Center for Policy Analysis.

Although there is no clear definition of the creative economy, it essentially encompasses those businesses, organizations, and individuals who produce and distribute cultural goods, services, and intellectual property - from art, film, photography, and music to architecture, advertising, and jewelry design.

Somerville is well-known for attracting and supporting artists; this report will make legible to others in the State how to serve the creative community. While economic impacts are an inherently crude measure of artistic expression, they are an important part of the larger narrative of how creative activity increases cultural and economic well-being.

Please take the survey now. It is only 12 questions.

All information, whether personal or financial, collected in the survey will be kept in strict confidence before being aggregated for the report.

Thanks for your support.

Take the survey.

Open Shop & Hacker Junk Mosaics
Two workshops, Sat. June 8th 1 pm -3 pm & Weds. June 12th 3pm-5 pm
$15-25/workshop, sliding scale

Parts and Crafts, 577 Somerville Ave, Somerville, MA 02144
Details at: http://www.partsandcrafts.org 410-967-5207 /contact@partsandcrafts.org

In Hacker Junk Mosaics, kids use cast-off computer parts to make design choices, experiment with shapes, colors and patterns and explore the interaction of 3D and 2D materials while making an abstract work of art to hang on the wall. As adults, making art from computer parts is not only fun, but we get the extra satisfaction of knowing we are transforming outdated technology and putting valuable materials to use – rather than just sending them to the landfill.

We'll be taking apart computers this Saturday from 12-1 pm -- and from 1-3, putting them back together in awesome compositions! If you're interested in checking out open shop or getting your hands dirty taking apart junk computers and learning a little bit about composition, mixed media and design, this is the workshop for you! Open to kids, families, and curious adults who want to take things apart, see how they work, and make new and interesting things out of them.

We like this workshop so much we're offering it twice in one week! We are also accepting donations of used computer parts -- to drop stuff off or learn more about this event, email contact@partsandcrafts.org

Hope you can make it out!

from http://www.mindseyeyarns.com/2013/03/28/shop-for-sale/ , posted 3/29/13:

Shop For Sale

Dear friends,

Today, I have some bad news. After a great deal of thought, I have decided that the time has come for me to get out of the yarn business. Why... )

Therefore, rather than try to keep the shop going at great cost to myself and for little return, I have decided to move on. Rather than close immediately, I would like to take the month of April to offer the shop for sale to anyone who would like to purchase it and keep it going. I am happy to discuss the details with anyone who is interested. Please email me or give the shop a call. Just to warn you, running a business like this is a huge job and you have to be good at many, many things. I would recommend that a group of people with a variety of skills and interests would be the best bet for turning this place around and making it successful again. I, of course, would help you in any way I can.

I cannot keep the shop on the market forever. If I do not receive a very serious offer for the place by April 30, I will begin the process of selling off everything and closing up.Read more... )
All my best,

Lucy

It's not what you're thinking.

I am determined to find shrinky dink paper (in a brick & mortar store). I thought Michael's would have it, but the woman was completely baffled by my request. Any ideas?

I have this desire to learn to make an earth oven. (Like the ones described in this book: http://www.amazon.com/Build-Your-Own-Earth-Oven/dp/096798467X) I have no space to do it myself, sadly. But, if you happen to have the space and are planning to make one and want some help, I'm a reasonably competent manual laborer and happy to help you out! If you happne to know a public organization that wants to have one, I'd be happy to help out.

(I know this is zero percent chance of being useful today but figure someone may want to make one in the next five years and may find this.....)

Email me at genevra.mcneil [at] gmail [dot] com if you want free labor!

Does anyone have recommendations for folks in the area who sew at reasonable prices? I have a dress that has a tear in the side and I need someone who can sew it shut. The dress was only a few dollars, so I'd prefer not to take it somewhere expensive. If I were handy I could do this myself, but I am blessed with the gift of clumsiness. :)

Thanks and Happy New Year!!
