This Halloween season, join us for a chilling production of Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth. In a play saturated with grand terrors it is the subtle horror of manipulation that most sets our hair on end.

The Boston Comics Roundtable’s Creator Talk series will continue on Sunday September 6th with mental health cartoonist LB Lee. Held at the new Boston Comics Workspace at 561 Windsor St., Studio 306, the event is free and open to the public, though a suggested donation of $5 is welcome. Lee’s talk will begin at 2:00 pm and is sponsored by Ninth Art Press.
Lee lives with Dissociative Identity Disorder, a topic explored in their comic MPD For You and Me. Their work, populated with “mentally unusual people,” incorporates rigorous research with a playful approach. They have appeared at various academic conferences and comics conventions, shining a light on the realities of trauma, homelessness, eating disorders, and other less-than-traditional but important topics.
Lee’s Creator Talk will focus on process, from research to the final product. They will discuss the challenges that come with mental health cartooning—telling difficult stories and translating psychological phenomena into readable art—as well as personal challenges that come with working around a disordered memory.
About LB Lee
LB is a multivarious entity who make mental health comics, draw pretty pictures, and write stories about a mythical medieval Europe where the Roman Empire never existed. You can find more about LB Lee and their work online at http://healthymultiplicity.com/loonybrain/Home.html.

Filmage screening at Somerville Theatre
Jul. 25th, 2015 05:04 pm![[identity profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/openid.png)
On Monday August 3rd the Boston Zine Fest is presenting a special, one-time screening of Filmage: the story of Descendents/ALL at the Somerville Theatre. The showing is at 7:30pm, tickets are only $10, and are available day of, or in advance online HERE. This showing is a fundraiser for the Boston Zine Fest, which is happening at Make Shift Boston and Simmons College in October.
The film is a documentary about the seminal punk bands Descendents and ALL, which share the same members except the vocalists. Even if you aren't a fan of either band, or even punk in general, the film is a really well made documentary about the trials and tribulations about bands that record and tour as their full time jobs. Hopefully you'll join us for this special screening to benefit a good community cause!
Thanks!
Liz for Boston Zine Fest
P.S. you can view the trailer for the film HERE

Happy Bike Week! Please join me on Wednesday, May 27th, to enjoy a night of wanderlust and bikes at the 6th Annual Ciclismo Classico Bike Travel Film Festival just up the bikepath at the Regent in Arlington.
This year’s 12 short films feature destinations from Malaysia to Patagonia and everywhere in between. We'll experience crazy monkeys, high mountain passes, and an inspiring bike-touring toddler. Most importantly, we'll see that adventure has many meanings - from trips spanning years to one lasting one day. One highlight is the evening’s finale: “Panamerican Childhood” follows the unbelievable two-year journey of toddler Ronja – from Alaska to the tip of South America!
In addition to the films, a festive atmosphere is on tap at this most-anticipated Bike Month event. A social hour begins at 6 PM and features a Cookie Showcase highlighting the delicious offerings of local bakeries. Also included is the “Great Jersey Giveaway” raffle, which will outfit winning guests with bike clothing for their next adventure. One lucky attendee will win a free Ciclismo Classico bicycle vacation valued at over $3,500.

new play read-through?
Oct. 29th, 2014 10:04 am![[identity profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/openid.png)
To be done properly, it will require twelve readers, six female-presenting and six male-presenting (plus one for stage directions). There are no small roles, nor any big ones, really. I already know that I'll rewrite the play with six roles, as it's too unwieldy, but I believe it'll be fun for a read-through now regardless. If there's sufficient interest beyond twelve readers, I'll reserve a room at the library (as I did with Fire and Ice.
What's this play about? Friendship, sex, religion, and mid-life crises. It's a comedy of manners, a modern take on what happens when a love potion a la Midsummer Night's Dream sends a group of friends into a tailspin. I'm told that it's witty, interesting, and timely.
Comment or email me at ceelove [at] speakeasy (dot) net, and I'll get you a PDF of the Twelve Nights script.

Two pieces of news on Union Square

The New York Times profiles Somerville (specifically, Union Square) again. This is, what, the fourth or fifth time? We're either officially hip or officially done being hip.
Late-shift Fluff volunteers needed!

The Pushcart War
Book by Jean Merrill
Adapted by Jenny Vernick
Friday, August 15th, 6:00 PM
The Center For Arts at the Armory
191 Highland Ave., Somerville, MA 02143
$2 suggested donation
A war is being fought on the streets of New York City!
The pushcart peddlers, led by Maxine Hammerman, believe that they deserve to sell their wares on the street. But the big trucks are taking over the streets, crowding New York City in one big traffic jam. Come see the ferocious General Anna, the quiet Dorris the Florist, and the crackpot Frank the Flower as they rebel against the trucks using nothing but peashooters and bravery as the Mayor tries desperately to keep the streets of his city--as well as his precious peanut butter--safe. This ridiculously silly show is sure to be a hit for all ages!

The Watch City Players have a summer show going up, Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest.
It's going up Saturday, July 26th at 7pm in an outdoor performance at Clement G. Morgan Park at 60 Columbia St. in Cambridge, MA. Admission is free but donations are gladly accepted.
This show is fun and funny, but what really makes it special is that it's all about gender and gender variation. Some characters are gender-flipped, some are reinterpreted as trans or nonbinary; even the whole idea of Earnest is based around the lead characters exploring their own gender identities outside of the ones assigned to them. It's an interesting and fun queering of the text.
The cast is as follows:
Jaclyn Worthing / Ernest Worthing: Frances Kimpel
Algernon Moncrieff: Charlotte Oswald
Gregory Bracknell: Matt Kamm
Cecil Cardew: Eboracum Richter-Dahl
Lady Bracknell: April Farmer
Miss Prism: Jonathan Kindness
Dr. Chasuble: Sparrow Rubin
Lane/Merriman: Stephanie Karol
Directed by Lenny Somervell
