Does anyone of have an operational sewing machine collecting dust that you'd like to unload for an affordable fee? Serge/Sew combo would be extra bonus.
Thanks.

There's no such thing as a serge/sew combo machine. There are sewing machines, and sergers, and they are different animals. There are a few manufacturers who have made sewing machines that they have claimed to be serge/sew combo machines (Brother is a notable such company), but they don't actually serge, they are standard sewing machines that can produce a stitch which looks like, but is not, a serge stitch.

You can find my book, "How To Buy A Sewing Machine", at my web site, Sewing With Tom (http://www.sewingwithtom.com). The downloadable version is $2. There's also a widget to talk with me on the web site, if you have questions.

there is no serge /sew combo.. the mechanics are really different. You can however use a zigzag/or some of the decorative stitches to work out.

You can look at the singer store in Davis for a good used machine... this is a pretty good deal... esp since most "cheap or free machines" need to be fixed/adjusted/ cleaned.

The serger I use is the brother 1040D from walmart/amazon which is uber cheap (@230- when sergers start at 400) and it generally behaves, once you learn how to use them. -- it has very limited features.

I have one. It's old-ish (1974-era) Singer and basically collecting dust. I had it tuned up by the davis sq. sewing place several years ago, and it worked fine. Then I tried to adjust the tension to get it to sew through stretch velvet better, and now it's finicky. I think it just needs someone who actually understands sewing machines to get it working again, or another tune-up.

If this sounds interesting, email me at jadia_13 on yahoo. I'm pretty interested in unloading it so it'll definitely be affordable.

Old Singers are actually quite valuable machines because they're made with metal interior parts and last a long time (as yours clearly has), whereas modern Singers are plastic and break a lot. just FYI.

About a year ago I managed to find a Featherweight 301 (http://www.sewingonline.co.uk/machines/singer301/) in wonderful condition (cleaned and lubed and everything) on Craigslist for $100. So keep an eye out there as well as here, you never know what you might find :).
