[livejournal.com profile] purpleglitter pointed out to me that we can change the permission level to allow any member to add tags to any post instead of having one new co-maintainer do all the work. It will be a wiki-like experiment for the community. Only maintainers would be allowed to create new tags, and we are working on a list of usable tags and they should be ready to go live tomorrow.

We will still be looking for another co-maintainer, and if you are interested you may still apply in the previous post. Having another co-maintainer will allow more consistent enforcement of existing rules. Looking back, posts that should have been flagged as ads were missed and with an added hand this will be less likely. I will also be making some other minor changes, including the criteria for determining what is considered a political advertisement.

Bottom line, I created this community primarily to promote discussion of local interests and the sharing of local information. Advertisements are and will continue to be considered second tier posts.

I apologize if I lost my temper, but the volume of attack was getting too great. Errors in enforcement will happen. This is not a perfect system. I want this community to be a calm happy place and over the next few days I will be making a number of small changes to make it again so.

Now I sleep.

I have turned off moderated posting. New posts will again show up immediately.

I have created a new community: [livejournal.com profile] davis_meta for discussions, complaints, issues, ideas, and observations of the [livejournal.com profile] davis_square community. Meta discussions should from this point forward take place in that community, not [livejournal.com profile] davis_square itself.

If you do not like how I've run this community, there is now a new alternative community, [livejournal.com profile] davissquare, where you are free to post uncut ads. [livejournal.com profile] somervillemass was created a quite some time ago in protest to my policies, as well.

The list of tags will be up later today, and I hope to chosen a new co-mod either today or tomorrow.

...and it's a sign of the times when some things, such as advertisements, never change. I just checked out this community's archive of the first two months of posts, and of course someone posted an un-cut ad as post #10. I felt like sharing.

Switching subjects, where's the best place to go sledding around here?

Cut with the very polite, considerate and friendly advice of someone on the community. Thanks for your insight!

The short version: I am in need of a space in which to shoot a film.

I don't want to destroy this community, because it is such a valuable community resource. However, it is also not in this community's best interest to be splintered into several similar communities. As the only way to repair the schism is for me to step down, I am doing just that. I am leaving [livejournal.com profile] cos, [livejournal.com profile] laurenhat, [livejournal.com profile] dustriderma, and [livejournal.com profile] tahnan as the new maintainers of the community. I hope that they will keep this community in line with its original vision of being a forum for discussion of local interests and sharing of local information and wisdom. It will be unfortunate if this community does eventually become the sea of ads that the majority of local communities are. Ultimately however, that is up to the new maintainers. Good luck.

EDIT:

I was unsuccessful at adding [livejournal.com profile] laurenhat to the maintainer list. If the new maintainers I was able to add could add [livejournal.com profile] laurenhat when they have the opportunity, it would be appreciated.

Thank you for making me one of the moderators. I swear to uphold the law, truth and justice... i.e. stay out the way untill needed.
