...or at least win friends.

I moved to this area a few months ago from far, far, away and don't really have friends here yet. I'm finally realizing that my job/lifestyle aren't conducive to making friends here, so I wanted to both get some suggestions on awesome social functions and "introduce" myself in case anybody is in a similar situation. My work schedule is demanding enough that I can't commit to regular volunteer gigs, which has always helped me meet people in the past. How do smart, artsy (but not hipster), progressive, twenty-something women make friends around here?

I'll also add that I'm applying to be an adjunct English instructor and I'm a writer, so I'd love to meet people involved in academia and/or writing. I'm happily coupled and not looking for a date; I'd just like to try to form a social life here. If you have any suggestions or want to say hi, let me know of any awesome activities or send me a message.

Thanks! :)

So my inlaws sent me me birthday package and the post office says it was delivered on the 7th. No one in my apartment building has see it. So it was probably stolen off our pourch, I know this happens a lot. Yet through out the 3 yrs I've live here this had never happened before.. I live on a end of a side street in teele square.
I am talking to the post office tomorrow just to see if it is there.

Anyways, just get packages insured and with a signature required.

I'm quite certain I haven't seen this mentioned here before.

I need to buy about two dozen postcards that say "Somerville, MA" somewhere on them. I think I might have seen some at the Blue Cloud Gallery many months ago, but I'm curious if anyone has seen some around elsewhere. Design doesn't really matter, just so long as it's clear they're from here. (Burrito wrappers can't really be mailed, I've found.)

Redbones' 12th annual bicycle party and benefit is tonight, on Chester Street from 5 to 9 pm. Your $15 ticket gets you food & drink, bicycle valet parking, music, and (if you arrive before 7:30) a raffle ticket. Be there!

(note: postponed from last Monday 5/12 due to expected rain, which didn't actually occur)

I've got a sort of random street-sweeping question that someone in the community might be able to answer.

I live over on the Thorndike Street dead-end next to Kingston, on the south side of the bike path. Both sides of the street are marked for Wednesday street sweeping, and until this year, I've never seen sweeping on Thursdays. But April 10, I got a ticket for parking on the dead end on the Thursday (the only time that the street's been swept on a Thursday; since that time I haven't seen a street sweeper). I appealed by mail including a picture of the sign, and got it rejected as a validly-issued ticket.

Does anyone here understand the grounds? Is there a law that says even/odd side controls, regardless of the signs? I'm just sort of at a loss as to the reasoning for it being a valid ticket.

Just got the Somerville she's-not-Tom-Champion phone call: Til sometime tomorrow, we've lost that 93N onramp[Edit: the one AT Home Depot]. It said for emergency repairs, and I haven't found what that's concerning. But there it is(not).
Pop on up to the next Mystic Ave onramp or Meffa, down to da Museum a' Science, etc. for your 93N cruisin' needs.

[Note my Edit above- the Home Depot one. Town didn't say nature of emergency on phone]

So we need a new roof, hopefully before it rains again, and we're considering a metal one for durability (supposed to last 50 years) and energy efficiency (they're supposed to make your house cooler). Anyone have a recommendation (or dis-recommendation) for a local roofer who does metal roofs? It's apparently fairly specialized, and the general construction folk on my list don't do it.

Thanks!
