I have a typical somerville yard (about 10 feet x 10 feet) surrounded by some pretty large trees.  We have tried the past three years to plant grass to no avail -- we've turned the soil, added fertilizer, watered like crazy and used different grass seeds.  This seems like an extremely wasteful use of resources to me, especially for such a small space.  I notice that a lot of people in the Davis Square area have great little patches of green in their yards or plant other interesting plants -- and I was looking for some suggestions on either how to get a low-impact grass going or some other plant recommendations for ground cover.

Please don't recommend asphalt -- my neighbors have that and it is really depressing.

As the all-knowing [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman noted in this post, Good Time Emporium in Somerville will close its doors on June 30 to make way for an Ikea. Personally, I think we would all be better off if they just share the space (think of the possibilities), but then again, I like the idea of a KFC/Tanning Salon/Maryland State Police Substation (this actually exists).

In the scant time we have left to enjoy this Greater Boston landmark, I propose a meetup. I'm just gonna throw June 20 out as a possible date, but I leave it to your snarky wisdom in the end.

I'm looking to rent a car from Saturday through Monday, and will not have a ride to pick it up. Does anyone have any experience with car rental places in the area? Walkable and/or transport accessible, please. I'm definitely looking for cheap versus luxe. Enterprise in Davis is long gone, no? Thanks!
