So I'm finishing up Legends of Winter Hill by Jay Atkinson, a flawed but entertaining slice of true life crime and cops in Somerville from the 1950's on. It's a funny reminder of how much Somerville has changed - you've got all sorts of shenanigans going on amidst familiar landmarks like RedBones, the Doherty Funeral Home, Union Square, and of course, the once infamous Winter Hill.

What other good books (of any genre) about Somerville are out there that are worth reading?

The Davis Sq. Subway is on the wasteland side of Elm Street near Green Tomato, Joey's Thai and other anonymous establishments.

What is the best dry cleaner in the area?

I know this has come up in this community before but there is no tag for it.

I'm considering taking advantage of one of the phone/internet bundle offers that keep cramming my mailbox. Can anyone speak to Comcast's phone service, or Verizon's internet? Or something else entirely?

Right now I have Verizon for phone and Comcast for internet/cable (REALLY basic cable). I'd like to bundle with the most reliable all-round company.

I'm in West Somerville.

Thanks!

Short version: if someone gets a fine for not putting a bag of trash in the barrel, does that mean someone called 311 to complain, or do trash collectors/parking enforcement/dpw/police go around on trash day with ticket books?

The "Joey", Tufts' student shuttle from campus to Davis Square, will be adding a tracking monitor to JP Licks in the fall.  The shuttle is free and open to anyone who wants to ride it.  The shuttle drops off on Tufts campus in front of the student center and at the academic quad.

UPDATE: I found my cat in my garage this morning.  I had the door cracked open the past few days and she was there this morning.  She hadn't been there before, so she must have come in the middle of the night.  I stuck my head in and called her name a few times then heard her meowing, in a sort of angry/scared/loud/howly way.   She wouldn't come to me at first, but after about 5 or 10 minutes she came closer and let me pick her up.  She seems fine.  She was a little dusty and she was hungry, but is otherwise ok.  Thanks for all the advice and the watchful eyes.

ORIGINAL POST:
I lost my cat. :(

Black cat with white on her chest and her belly. Named Penny, she sometimes answers to her name. Has a collar and microchip. She is probably scared, as she is an indoor only cat and is fairly shy around people she doesn't know.

Please call Grace at (617) 970-8919 if you find her or have any information.

Lost Tuesday April 14th on Newbury Street, Teele Square

I'd like to invite the DSLJ community to tomorrow's HRC meeting 6:30-8:30pm. The agenda includes discussion of the police surveillance cameras, a proposed snow removal committee, hiring investigators, and immigrant issues. The meetings are usually quite informal and we encourage public participation. By the way, there are 7 open seats on the commission for residents. I hope you'll join us!
