Curb alert!

Outside 30 Highland Road in Somerville, until the trash guy comes to take it away tomorrow. Will not hold items!

- an older printer/scanner/fax 3-in-1 machine. I think it works.
- twin-XL size mattress and box spring, nicely packaged in a plastic bag to protect it from the weather
- a large plastic storage tub, inside of which you'll find:
- a bunch of laundry detergent, bleach, dryer sheets, etc
- a mattress cover for a queen(?) sized mattress
- a lot of cardboard boxes
- two sets of cookie presses
- a bunch of tupperware, which even has matching lids!
- assorted household sundry

Please come take this, I hate things going to waste. It's all perfectly usable, we just don't have space for it.

According to NabeWise, a site for exploring neighborhoods in different cities, Davis Square is the #1 trendiest neighborhood in Boston. As someone who used to live in Davis, I think it's pretty true. Anyone else think so?

So everyday when I walk to and from work in the Davis/Tufts/Ball Square area I am a good little pedestrian and only cross in designated crosswalks, waiting for cars, crosswalk signals etc. And everyday I have to dodge a driver who is not paying attention, or does not care and very nearly runs me down. This is particularly bad at powderhouse circle, where the crosswalk signals are completely ignored by drivers.

The other day though, a driver did this right in front of a cop and got pulled over -- Yeah for me! And so I was wondering....nearly running over a pedestrian in a cross walk is punishable by up to $200 ticket *and* is a public safety issue. Couldn't the city just park a cruiser at powderhouse circle or some other place where violations are common and start ticketing people for that rather than focusing so much on the $50 permit parking tickets (which is not a public safety issue as far as I can tell)? Is there some reason they don't do this?

Sorry if this comes across as car negative.....

Flu Shots?

The local drugstores are advertising seasonal flu shots. Does anyone know when local municipalities will have flu shots available?

So I am contesting a ticket & received the date that Traffic & Parking has scheduled my hearing for, however I will be out of town for a work conference. I called 311 to change my date & they said it wouldn't be a problem, connected me to another line which rang endlessly. Finally someone picked it up & hung up. I waited a while figuring they must be really busy & called back later. Same thing happened again. How is one supposed to change their hearing date & time if no one will answer their calls at Traffic & Parking????? I don't want to get in trouble for not showing up to a hearing that I am trying desperately to change.

Baklava

Okay, this might be a bit weird, but where in the general Davis Square area can one get really good baklava? Thanks for any ideas. :)

Hey all! I've got a huge, dark-brown dresser out on the curb. It's about 4 feet high, with two deep square drawers and one large rectangular drawer, along with a small cabinet with a shelf in it. It's been extremely useful for storing bedding, towels, and extra costumes, but it's just too big to fit into my new place, so I'm offering it up to the street. It's in great condition, with the only issue being that the top drawer sticks slightly.

It fits in any hatchback or minivan with the seats removed/folded down. It's at 21 Moore Street, a bit south of Teele Square, around the corner from Sabur. Come get it before someone else does!

I'm going to be staying in Medford for several weeks, and I had a few questions about riding my bike in the area:
What local laws should I be aware of/where can I find a list of said laws?
How secure do I need to make my bike when I leave it outside? (Is locking the frame and the front wheel to something enough, or should I also lock up the seat and/or rear wheel?)
Can I take my bike on the T?

Thanks!

Surely this question has been addressed here, but I can't find it. What is the correct way to dispose of a monitor? I know they won't take it if I put it out on the curb. That's how the monitor before this one ended up in the garage for 5 years (and counting).

Actually, this one works perfectly well, so if anyone wants it, it's all yours. But it's the size and weight of a dog carrier filled with bricks, so I'm guessing no one will. I just don't know the drill for scrapping it. Thanks!

I'm looking to do some work on my car. Is anyone aware of somewhere where

- you can rent garage space for a few days at a time at a reasonable rate
- they don't mind if you work on the car

and preferably

- you can rent tools by the hour
- you can leave the car there for a couple of weeks at a reasonable rate

?

(I know I can probably get away with doing the work in a self-storage garage, but I'm looking for something that actually welcomes DIY and provides some support for it. Near Davis is ideal, but I can manage an hour's drive.)

So this might be better suited to craigslist, but I'd prefer to stick as local as possible. Does anyone in the area have extra boxes (sturdy enough to move with) I could use? The rain-soaked, half-ripped ones that get tossed on the curb don't really seem like they'd do the trick...
