The giant maple on Highland (next to the dance studio, at the end of Cherry Street) is being taken down as I write this. Does anyone know if there was a problem with the tree or they have plans for the lot?

I don't know for sure about this specific tree, but maples around here do a lot of damage to drainage pipes; could have had a lot to do with that.

I think parts of it were dead and hazardous especially in windy storms--it's a shame, as it's such a nice shady tree.

IDK but you just reminded me to put in a request to have the tree growing into my 3rd floor bedroom window trimmed. Yay!

I couldn't believe it. That tree looked perfectly healthy to me. It was one of the best features of the neighborhood; my main regret was that it was fenced off so I never even got to sit under it let alone touch the trunk.

I understand the economics; they'll probably put up 6 condos or something on that lot. But it still hurts, and my life has lost something now.

I have no idea if this is true for this specific maple, but maples are notoriously brittle and crack down the middle over time. It may be that an arborist looked at the tree after the storm and told the owner that one more storm might take it down. Rather than face the possible damage and injury, most property owners will take down a tree like that.

Its a shame regardless, but city trees are more like potted flowers than truly wild plants. They just don't last as long because they can't be allowed to die like trees in the forest (ie, fall down)

I just saw the remains sitting on the lawn.
The huge bottom pieces looked perfectly fine. No holes or age damage at all.

Sorry -

Sad to say but I have to imagine that the lot is going to be developed if the tree looks OK.

The maple was sick—my boyfriend lives in one of the apartments there (as did I, for a while). AFAIK, there's no plan to develop the lot into something else.

Excellent, great to hear. I always enjoy seeing that nice green lot on the way down Highland, unfortunately now without the shady tree.

Will they plant (or transplant) another tree in its place?

Not that I know of. If I hear anything I'll post it here.
