This Thursday at the Armory, Somerville Open Studios presents our fourth annual Art in Fashion Show, Beyond the Pattern.

Our live runway event features 12 participating SOS artists showcasing their original clothing, jewelry, and accessory designs in an exciting and dynamic mode - a departure from the traditional open studios setting.

From daring creations to graceful silhouettes, costumes to couture - and everything imaginable in between - the fashion show offers a unique opportunity to view the work of a group of individual artists, independently and in collaboration, exploring the idiom of art in fashion.

Admission is free. Doors open at 6:30 pm, with the show starting at 7:30.
Seating is general admission; please arrive early for best seating. The Armory bar will be open, featuring local craft brews and soft drinks for your sipping pleasure. The Armory is located at 191 Highland Avenue, a pleasant 20-minute walk from Davis Square.

For more information, including descriptions of all participating artists, visit SomervilleOpenStudios.org/fashion/ .

Somerville Open Studios are this weekend! Nearly 400 local artists will display their works at 108 locations throughout the city.

All studios will be open Saturday+Sunday, May 2+3, from noon to 6 pm. Some artists will also be open on Friday evening, May 1, from 6 to 9 pm.

You can find our printed mapbooks at stands all over Somerville, or visit SomervilleOpenStudios.org for online maps and a full list of participating artists.

Not sure where to begin? Visit our Artists' Choice group show first, at the Somerville Museum, One Westwood Road. We invited each SOS artist to submit one work of art to this show, so it's a good place to survey the many different kinds of art being shown this weekend. The Artists' Choice show will be open Thursday 2-7 pm, Friday 2-9 pm, Saturday and Sunday 11 am to 6 pm.

The Inside-OUT Gallery, in the windows of the Davis Square CVS, is exhibiting work by 14 artists who are participating in SOS for the first time this year. We'll have a Sidewalk Reception outside the CVS windows this evening from 5:30 to 7 pm.

If you are participating in SOS, or you have a favorite artist you'd like to tell everyone to visit, please leave comments here!

I'm seeking volunteers (especially facepainters) for the most adorable event in Boston! It’s called Duckling Day and is put on by the nonprofit Friends of the Public Garden. We need a huge volunteer presence and we're right on Boston Common so it’s an easy MBTA red line trip!

Here's the 411 - please contact me (Karin) at events@friendsofthepublicgarden.org if you're interested.

Duckling Day, an event from the nonprofit Friends of the Public Garden
Sunday, May 10th (Mother's Day!)
10:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Boston Common, Boston

This is a celebration of the classic children’s book “Make Way for Ducklings” and many of the kids are dressed as ducklings which is the cutest thing ever. There is about 90 minutes of fun activities for the under-6 crowd (magician, juggler, puppet shows, facepainting, outdoor play equipment) and massages for the moms – and then the Mayor speaks and the kids and families form an amazingly adorable parade that ends at the Public Garden.

Volunteers needed: anytime between 7:30 AM until 1:30 PM - there is an early shift and a late shift
Tasks: pretty basic – helping with set-up, registration and check-in (which is a big job requiring lots of personnel!), and helping the different activity people keep the activity areas running smoothly. I do also need people interested in facepainting. You don't have to be a pro, just reasonably interested/able to work with kids in this fun way!

Like art, food is a visual, sensory and social experience. Flavors and textures, aromas and taste are all elements that can be explored through artwork. Culture, memories and health are just some themes that can be viewed through the lens of food. Bite is an exploration of art made with food, art about food and/or food about art.

We will be collecting food and toiletries donations to support the Somerville Homeless Coalition's Project Soup. Learn more

The Creative Somerville Series is a series of “fireside chats” with local creatives and entrepreneurs in design, tech, food, social impact and other fields–celebrating the creative and entrepreneurial energy that makes Somerville great. The Creative Somerville Series is not your typical power point and Q&A. Our free fireside chats are about getting to hear someone’s story, learning about how they think and create, and getting to share creative energy and ideas in an intimate setting. The events are co-sponsored by the Somerville Beat and Somerville Local First.

Hello! First Church Somerville, the big beige church on College Ave. with the rainbow flag and the Black Lives Matter banner, would like to offer our Chapel to an artist or artists for Open Studios. But not just any artist: we'd like to show works by African-American artists, or works about the lives of African-American people.

It's a great location, just a five minute walk from Davis Square. We'll pay the SOS fee. We'd like to showcase Somerville artists if we can, but we'll go further afield if we need to.

If you are an artist, or you know an artist whom we should contact, please email us: fcs-blm-show@googlegroups.com.

FirstWorks: New Playwrights at T@F proudly presents: That Night in the Field, by Christopher Lockheardt.

A black envelope, a visit from a summer fling, and a mysterious hammering in the old field set off accusations and recriminations at the family gathering for Mary Gillen's 25th birthday. Christopher Lockheardt's That Night in the Field is FirstWorks' inaugural project, an exciting new script in development here at T@F!

Director Andrea Humez has assembled a great cast to workshop the script and we want you to get involved, too! Join us for a staged reading of That Night in the Field and you'll have the chance to give Chris your feedback and help to shape this engaging new work.

One night only: Thursday, January 29, 8:00 p.m. at Unity church (6 William Street, Somerville)

This event is free, with a suggested donation of $5.

DATE & TIME:

Thursday, December 4, 2014wrap-around-kris-hatch-square
5:00 pm-10:00 pm

LOCATION:
Davis Square Plaza, Davis Square, Somerville

WHAT’S HAPPENING:
Each year, the Nave Gallery hosts Wrap Around, a sale of handmade goods to benefit the Somerville Homeless Coalition.

This year, the Nave will be participating in Midnight Madness with a Wrap Around table right in the middle of Davis Square. Midnight Madness is the Square’s annual event where businesses in Davis Square extend their store hours one Thursday in December to encourage folks to shop local for the holiday season.

If getting to the gallery on the weekends is tough, this is a perfect place to come by–and bring friends! We’ve made about $1,300 for the Coalition so far. Last year we made $2,700. Help us beat that this year!

More info on Wrap Around:

It's the weekend before Thanksgiving, which means it's time for Open Studios at Brickbottom Artists' Building and Joy Street Studios.

Both buildings will be open Saturday and Sunday, November 22-23, from noon to 6 pm. They are a two-block walk from each other, so it's easy to visit both in one trip. Buses 80, 86, 87, 88, 90, and 91 all stop reasonably close to one or both of these buildings.

Does anyone know of an artist who makes products out of recycled maps?  I have some to give away but the quantity is huge. I can't give away small amounts so I am looking for someene to take thousands. Preference would be to local artists.
