I found out about this mobile market too late this season to check it out, but I was very pleased to hear that it was offering fresh produce in underserved areas. There's a lot of talk about how to get quality food to food deserts, this project is actually doing that.

This morning I learned they are raising some funds. If you are interested in supporting it you can check out the city's note here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=648078361911719&set=a.106724362713791.3870.106715832714644&type=1&theater

Or you can go straight to the donation site: http://www.citizinvestor.com/project/somerville-mobile-farmers-market . It took me a couple of minutes to figure out you have to enter a number and then the donate button. I just kept trying to click donate....

Given the recent news that a district court has recently affirmed that the TSA can order local goverments to lie does not have to tell the truth about security camera use, I wonder if it's time to revisit our local discussion of the surveillance cameras installed in Somerville five years ago, and the cameras installed on Somerville police cars. (This discussion might also be usefully informed by recent revelations that the NSA can break most encryption on the internet.)

At the time, I understood that the city officials were surprised that public responses to installing the cameras were limited to a public hearing, some discussions on the Davis Square LJ, and an editorial in the Somerville Journal. I was surprised, too.

In 2008, the Somerville City goverment (to my surprise) refused to disclose information about where the cameras were placed, although when public interest peaked, several cameras were identified by the public. I don't have any data more current than that.

Also in 2008, Somerville became the first city in MA to install automatic license-plate checking cameras on police vehicles, which at the time could check 1500 license plates per hour (functionally, all clearly visible plates).

I think it's reasonable to wonder about any of the following: the software has been upgraded since 2008, more cameras may have been installed since 2008, the data may be kept for longer than the originally-stated two weeks, and it is likely that the cameras have been connected to a larger Homeland Security surveillance system.

Several folks on the DSLJ suggested a trial period of a year, which has passed. I don't know of any evidence that the cameras have been useful in deterring crime. Private cameras were, apparently, key, in identifying the Marathon bombers. I do know of abuse of CCTV; here is an example using license-plate-lookup cameras. Here is an example (original article behind paywall; link is a cut-and-paste) of Detroit law enforcement's abuse of databases to track ex-lovers, extort money, and run plates of political opponents' supporters.

I found this locally-written essay particularly cogent - questioning the effectiveness, value, and potential for abuse of these systems.

TL;DR: Somerville is watching you with Homeland-Security-connected cameras. Effectiveness is unproven, but in other locales, abuse is documented; also, local governments have, at times, been ordered to lie about camera use. All sources verified non-wingnut in my view.

ETA: based on first comment, changed language about TSA case to more accurately reflect Schneier's verbage.

“Somerville by Design” is coming to Davis Square! http://www.somervillema.gov/sites/default/files/PosterDavisSquare.pdf

It has been thirty years since the City prepared the “Davis Square Action Plan” to guide change associated with the MBTA Red Line Extension. When we look around Davis Square today, we see many physical characteristics that are the direct result of that plan. Here's the 1982 plan:http://www.somervillema.gov/sites/default/files/1984-DavisSquareActionPlan.pdf

Plans typically have a lifespan of twenty or thirty years, so the time is ripe for a community dialogue about the next generation of physical design improvements in Davis. The City will be launching a planning series this spring and summer that is similar to our recent Green Line “Station Area Planning Series” and the “Complete Streets Series”.

Please join us in a “Crowdsourcing Event” to set the table for our work over the next six months.
Date: Tuesday May 21st
Time: 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Place: Somerville Community Baptist Church (31 College Avenue)

Brad Rawson, Senior Planner
City of Somerville, Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development

Every New Year's Day, the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission celebrates the January 1, 1776 raising of the First American Flag on Prospect Hill.

At 11:30 am, "George Washington" on horseback leads a short parade from the City Hall concourse to Prospect Hill Park. The main event starts at noon, featuring songs, readings, short speeches, military re-enactors (both Colonial and British), and refreshments (usually donuts, coffee, hot chocolate, and cider). I've enjoyed this event for many years and encourage all of you to attend it too.

In past years, the city has invited the public to climb the tower at the end of the ceremony. I assume they will do so again, but I can't guarantee it. This is usually the only opportunity for the general public to climb it each year.

To reach Prospect Hill from West Somerville, take the #87 bus to Union Square, then walk up Stone Avenue. Or take the #80 or #88 or #90 bus to McGrath Highway, and walk up Greenville Street or Prospect Hill Avenue to the park.

Here are the city's official press release about the event and a flyer advertising the event.

Every New Year's Day at noon, the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission holds a ceremony at the Prospect Hill Tower to commemorate the raising of the First American Flag on January 1, 1776.

A small parade, led by a re-enactor playing George Washington, leaves the City Hall parking lot at 11:30, arriving at Prospect Hill Park for the noon ceremony. There will be light refreshments (probably hot coffee, cider, and donuts), short speeches and songs.

In past years, the city has invited the public to climb the tower at the end of the ceremony. I assume they will do so again, but I can't guarantee it. This is usually the only opportunity for the general public to climb it each year.

For those of you who don't subscribe to Resistat...

Somerville plans to buy the streetlights from NStar to cut down on maintenance costs (and replace the lights with LEDs). Your job is to:

  1. Notice lights that are dark at night, on during the day, or flicker on and off.
  2. Report them to NStar (via phone or web form).
  3. Tell 311 (via Twitter, phone, or Facebook) which lights you've reported.

Contact details are on the resistat page I linked.

I hope the LED lights are more focused and shine less into my window at night...
