By now you've likely heard that Somerville Open Studios is coming up in just a couple short weeks, on Sat. and Sun., May 3 + 4.

If you're a fan of SOS and enjoy visiting studios each year, perhaps you might like to lend a hand to its running, too? Every year thousands of visitors see hundreds of artists in their studios, and the event to pulled off by the efforts of scores of volunteers. But the artists who help run the event are all in their studios the whole time! We could use a few dozen supporters who are not opening their studios, and who could help out for an hour or so during the hours of SOS.

If this might be you, please drop me a line for more information.

Hundreds of Somerville Artists thank you!

Have Fun,

Rachel Mello

So, I'm at Boloco (hooray for telecommuting), and there's a big company-wide managers' meeting going on. I asked someone, and he said they've decided not to sell — they currently have a kitchen in Malden where they make their salsas and so on, and they're moving that here to make use of the basement space. So, the perilous situation of Davis Square's burrito-joint density decreasing has been averted.

According to people I met at the Davis Square Task Force yesterday, the sushi place at the former La Contessa on Highland Ave. will open tomorrow.

I'm still not sure if it's called Shino Express or Snappy Sushi. The last time I walked by, it had both signs on it.

This morning at about 7:00, a garbage truck took down a telephone pole in front of my house. Power lines everywhere - on my car, trapping me in the house. Finally the firemen allowed me to leave, clearly not letting me take my car to work. Luckily the 77 bus goes by work. We didn't loose power, but maybe we have since (at work now). The crazy thing (well, one of the crazy things) is that all the people - firemen and the truck driver and other city employees were pretty much getting a kick out of the situation. I guess it's a pretty big relief to be called out and not have to fight a fire, but it was odd seeing people standing there laughing at a pole and wires down on the street.

Does a sea chantey group exist in the general Boston area?

I did my usual routine today of traveling from Davis Square to Kendall via good ole red, when I saw something in this morning's Metro that may be of interest to my fellow Davis Square inhabitants. Apparently, a student from Tufts who has taken the train from Davis to Park Street was inspired and made a musical composition based on sounds of the commute (i.e. the noises that the train makes)  lasting 17 minutes - the exact length of the trip. The piece is called "Inbound" and it's part of program tonight called "Longitude" at Pickman Hall at Longy School of Music. It's at 8pm, and it's free! Maybe I'll see some there!

I'm looking for any recommendations for motorcycle repair near davis - I've taken my bike to Greater Boston Motorsports in Arlington in the past and feel that they generally do a reasonable job but they're pricy and they usually have a waiting list so the bike's in the shop for at least a few days if not longer.

I'm hoping to find someone who can come to my place and fix the bike in the driveway - at the moment it needs to have the carburators cleaned and rebuilt - something I've been told is relatively easy on this bike but I've never done it.

Thanks

OK, did anybody else drive on the parkway and notice pieces of the pavement missing? I mean, not the usual potholes.

In the Matignon-Broadway area, in the right lane going eastbound, there's a couple places where somebody cut squares of asphalt out from around the sewer drains. Surprised that I didn't lose a tire or break an axle. There isn't a lot of room to maneuver in those narrow lanes, especially with the way people insist on being neck-and-neck with you on that road.

So please, people, watch out for these.

My cellphone died today, and I'd rather not extend my contract to get a new phone. I'm wondering if anyone here has an unlocked GSM (ATT/Cingular and T-Mobile) phone they'd be willing to sell me. I'm not looking for anything  fancy, just maybe your old cellphone.

We have a date set for the May meet up. It is going to be on Thursday May 15th starting at 7pm at Joe Sent Me. They are very happy that we chose their bar and are excited to see us next month. In fact, I just got back from the bar tonight and chatted with one of the co-owners (hence, slight inebriation on my part). But really, if you don't PWI once in a while, its not very fun.

I don't think we had a Thursday event so far, so I picked that day to get the attendance of the people who couldn't make the previous events. Plus, our very own [livejournal.com profile] closetalker11's birthday is very close to that date so maybe it will turn into a B-day party :)

I used to go to this bar all the time and I personally know the owners and several of the bartenders. You would do me a tremendous favor if you showed up to this event! I'll post a poll closer to the date, but I hope people mark their calendar's now! :)

I'm in North Cambridge -- within walking distance of Davis -- and I'm selling an end table, a bookcase, and a chair. Check it out: http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/fur/644028994.html.

Thanks for your consideration!
