Anyone else heard the most horrifyingly sad cat noise for the past three days around Cedar Street?  I'd check it out, but I have a hunch it's some kidnapping ploy and I'd end up in the back of a van.

It sounds like one cat and doesn't sound like mating season, really.  Do I just have a new neighbor or is there a cat in need that I (and everyone else, apparently) am ignoring?

***I just heard back from the Animal Control officer - she thinks it's probably a cat / cats in heat, or males fighting over them.

Hi, guys! So many years of reading the community and my first post, as liaison for my beautiful beautiful church, just up on College Ave (the one with the purple doors), First Congregational Church of Somerville.

We've got a new Minister of Outreach, and she's rolling out all sorts of ways to bring new people into our loosely-defined but warmly-woven community, including 'Rest and Bread,' a peaceful new Wednesday-evening service:

First Congregational Church of Somerville, UCC
Invites you to a new quiet, contemplative service on your way home.

Rest and Bread
a service of prayer and communion
Wednesdays, 6:15-6:45 PM
Music for mediation at 6:00
89 College Ave., Davis Sq.

Thanks for your attention, all!

I'm going to be away on vacation for a while at the end of this week, and then we will have the June meetup late in the month, so we should probably start thinking now about the July meetup.

Please vote here and then make suggestions in the comments.

This is either a brilliant idea or a really stupid one, and I can handle the snarks (thankfully there is a snark community for this place).

Since 1) it looks like we are going to have some sort of non-bar meetup next month (either in addition to or instead of a bar meetup), and 2) It looks like a lot of people have things they need to get rid of...

Would it be possible to have the "meetup" be a group yard sale of some kind? We could then donate the sales to a charity *insert snark about how I turned into a freakin hippie*.

It is very easy to set up a charity page such as this one that I just created as an example. This would raise money for a local homeless coalition, but there could be others. If we did it, we would need a place to have it and we would need people to donate things. Individuals donating and selling items would be on the "honor system" whether they donated the proceeds or not. I don't know if Somerville would let us set up our things in a park or if there was someone willing to donate their front yard to make it happen.

If this is a bad idea, thats fine as well.

EDIT: Thanks to a very detailed and informative email from [livejournal.com profile] closetalker11, we are going to have to discuss the planning/ organization of this event. There are lots of ideas and we will need to work out the logistics. If you want to be in on the planning or have some interest in helping with organizing this, please join the temporary community [livejournal.com profile] davis_sale.

Hello everyone! My boyfriend and I are thinking about moving to Davis Square (we currently live in Central Square) this August.

Does anyone have any recommendation for a good Real Estate office/agent in Davis? We're looking to rent, not buy, and for an agency that has the landlords pay the fee (preferably, not required). I'd like to head over there as soon as tomorrow to start looking for a place.

Also, is Davis a quiet place to live? Or does that depend on the luck of who your neighbors are? If there's a section that's particularly loud, please let me know... noise really bothers me, and I'm a very light sleeper. This is one reason I want to get out of Central Square.

Thanks!

Anyone know where I can borrow/rent a drain snake? Our kitchen sink drain is clogged and the Draino does not seem to be working and we can't afford to pay someone to come out to snake it. It was almost $400 last time I had to.

Edit:
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I found one of the drill powered snakes in the basement and spend an hour on the phone with my dad, who's a plumber. I will be making a trip to the hardware store for a hack saw and some cuplings. Messy and hassle filled, but cheaper then a plumber...

Steve's post about First Church's Rest and Bread service reminded me that community members might be interested in the Somerville Community Ecumenical Pride Service my church is hosting. (P.S. I don't see any sort of "church" or "religion" tag. Thoughts on this? I know someone posted about the Longest Night service last year... and it seems the sort of tag it would be useful to have. Anyway.)

Cambridge Welcoming Ministries will be hosting the first Somerville Community Ecumenical Pride Service in conjunction with College Avenue United Methodist Church, Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church, First Congregational Church of Somerville, and Unity Church of God. (In the future we'd like it to be an Interfaith Service, but this year the Temple and the Hav were unable to join us.)

All are welcome join us this Sunday, June 8 at 5pm for a worship service (including Communion), followed by a fellowship dinner.
