I just got the confirmation that the 15th of October (Wednesday) will be the next DS meetup. This month, we are back to our home base of the Burren. As usual, the event will take place in the back room starting at 7pm. The bar manager wanted to know if we wanted anything "Halloweeny" that day, and since I don't know what that means, I'll ask you guys. I'll pick up name tags and various high fat and calorie candies. Please put it on your calendar now.

Here is the facebook event if you use that to keep track of things.

One week before the event I'll post a poll to get a general sense of the number of people who can attend.

and now I'll indulge in a personal message if you don't mind )

Does anyone know if there is over the air digital tv reception in the Davis Square area? I'm looking to drop my cable but would still like to have basic networks particularly for the election season.

At 11:39 this morning, the following routine message was sent to a large number of residents of  Wards 1 2 and 3 in South and East Somerville:

This is Chief Kevin Kelleher of the Somerville Fire Department with a public safety advisory concerning routine gas line maintenance work in the Springfield Street area.

Under Fire Department supervision, a natural gas supplier is currently venting a gas main near the intersection of Houghton and Springfield Streets.

While this controlled release poses no safety issues, the odor of gas may be noticeable intermittently throughout the day for residents in a large area to the east and south of this maintenance project.

Please be assured that Fire officials are closely monitoring this situation. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the City's Constituent Services Center by dialing 311. As always, if you wish to report any other fire or public safety emergencies, please do not hesitate to call 911. Thank you.

Unfortunately, our Connect CTY system suffered a technical malfunction , and many residents and businesses received multiple calls with the same message.

We sincerely apologize for this error, and we are working with our contractor to ensure that this problem does not recur.

A friend of mine is helping with the HONK! festival and she just let me know that the organizers are still trying to help 50 (!) of the musicians find places to stay,  and the event is fast approaching (it's Oct. 11-12). They are looking for people who live in the  general Somerville and Cambridge area who would be willing to accomodate some musicians for the Friday and Saturday nights (some on Sunday as well).

Many of the musicians who participate in this event travel from great distances, and it's a stretch for a lot of them to get here with all their instruments and gear to start with, so helping them out with housing is important to making the event happen. And you also get to have some potentially cool and interesting people stay with you for a few days.

Does anyone know where I can get Obama/Biden or McCain/Palin posters in the area?

I've seen them in windows and on people's lawns, but I never seem to encounter the folks giving them out.

Thanks!

Hey Ball Square denizens:

The work they've been doing on Broadway has resulted in an emergency water main shutdown. No Tom Champion (tm) call in advance because, well, emergency. I just called 311 to ask why I had no water and they told me it'll be off for about 3 hours (so until 7:30). There goes my pasta-for-dinner plan. Oh well.

Please note the following Connect CTY message sent to residents and businesses on Pritchard Ave, Pearson Ave, Highland Ave, Rogers Ave, Josephine Ave, and Willow Ave in the blocks bounded by Broadway and Boston Avenue to the north and Kidder Avenue to the south:

Hello. This is Jackie Rossetti from the City of Somerville calling with important information about an emergency water shutdown in your area.

At approximately 3:45 this afternoon, a water main break occurred in the Ball Square area, shutting off service to some area residents and businesses. Repair crews are on the scene, and expect to have service fully restored by no later than 8:00 this evening.

Once service has been restored, you may notice a short period of water discoloration, and although the water remains safe to drink, you should let it run clear before washing clothes. If you notice rust stains on wet laundry, do not dry your clothes and call 311 for information about obtaining free rust remover from the city.

If you need additional information or need to report additional water or roadway-related problems, please call the City’s Constituent Service Line at 311.

Join the Progressive Democrats of Somerville tonight from 6:30 to 8:00 at Sagra Restaurant, 400 Highland Avenue. Stop by any time if you can't make the whole thing (and hey, you just might find friends to watch the VP debate with later tonight, too!).

We'll be celebrating Rep. Carl Sciortino's primary election victory, and hearing briefly from some of our other elected reps. We'll also be holding brief endorsement votes for our uncontested local reps and senators, and deciding if PDS will support or oppose any state ballot questions.

Good food, Good company, & good politics! Hope to see you there!

I have a project that calls for distilled water. Does anyone know where I can get that around here? (from googling it seems like distilled water is different from the various bottled waters one can buy everywhere).
