How to make BOILED WATER

ingredients:
Tap Water-- possibly tainted with bacteria is *fine*

tools you will need:
-a pot or kettle
-a stove, hot-pot, electric burner, or electric kettle

1. add water to pot or kettle
2. apply heat using stove, hot-pot, electric-burner, or electric kettle (in case of extreme ridiculousness or drunkenness on a warm summer's evening, a weber grill can be substituted if used out-doors)

3. wait for water to boil; allow water to boil for 60 seconds; shut off heat

Tools you will NOT need:
-hundreds of dollars to give to the bottled-water companies
-plastic bottles
-an automobile to carry bottles of water

Does anyone have any experience with paying a parking ticket in person at the parking office in Davis Square with say $50 worth of quarters?    (unrolled)   I'm not quite mean enough to show up with $50 worth of pennies (and really don't want to spend the time sitting there while they are counted), but I want to make a statement.  I'll all honesty, I'd pay by credit card if Somerville didn't charge an extra fee (Boston doesn't).    Yes, I could mail in a check but there is no satisfaction in that.     Parking enforcement in Somerville has jumped the shark and it is time for some civil disobedience.

WBZ radio had a report this morning that restaurants in Lexington are closed due to the water emergency, so I called to see if the place I'd chosen for brunch in Somerville was open. As long as I had the phone warmed up, I decided to check a few other places. Seems like it is not effecting places here.

Here's the scoop:

Alfresco - open
Broken Yoke - open
Gargolyes - answering machine (with a Valentine's Day message...) in theory, 10:30 am open
Johnny D's - open
Kelly's - open
Renee's - recording says they're open, but it sounds like their usual message so can't be sure
Supreme Kitchen - Open
Thirsty Scholar - answering machine - in theory, open at 11 am
True Grounds - open (said "we may close early, not serving any cold, non-bottled beverages")

The Neighborhood in Union Square - OPEN
The Independent - answering machine, in theory opens at 11 am

Anyone know of other places that are open? or closed?

My baby girl has finally noticed the previously-invisible houseplants, and now we need to determine whether they're safe or not. We need help identifying 5 potted houseplants that we have, either via email photos or in person. I know there is info. online, but I'm having a hard time figuring out where to start looking since I don't know any of the names. We'd be happy to give someone $15 or a bottle of wine or something if they'd be willing to help out.

Thanks!

I was just at the Market Basket in Union Square; they had apparently just taken delivery of 2000 gallons of Market Basket Spring Water (the announcement said 'We just spoke to the regional manager and we're going to have plenty of water as long as this emergency continues.' So I asked at the front register when I got up there what that meant, and they told me they can get up to 10000 gallons a day if needed, though they don't expect to need quite that much after today; he estimated that was about what they'd sell by close).

They are selling them for 50 cents a gallon.

it was also cold and i was tempted to crack open a gallon in the parking lot and chug.

The Aroma Cafe opened yesterday at 278 Highland Ave, just beyond Cedar Street, the former location of Cafe Rossini and Cafe Lola. When I stopped in, they were doing a good business from both locals and Somerville Open Studios visitors.

They served coffee today (unlike most places in Davis Square), and had supermarket-bought ice for my iced coffee. The new owner is a Greek woman named Olga, who was preparing the sandwiches today. The walls are now plain white, as they have removed all of Rossini/Lola's old décor.

No menu is posted yet; if you ask what meals they are selling, the cashier will read from a handwritten list. They have sandwiches, and will have Greek and American food, but not pizza (at least not yet).

They have no web site yet.

Hey, I'm on a roll posting here, so I figured I'd continue.
We were offering a cool old vintage fan at our yard sale, and it didn't sell, so I opted to "rescue" it. I actually really love it and am glad it didn't sell. It's a behemoth of a thing - 4 feet tall on two "legs" and heavy. It works, but needs some repairs (probably a good cleaning, tune-up, and it's missing a bit of hardware and a part is currently held together by rope). I really want to bring it back to life. It would definitely need to be local, since it's so big. Anyone know of a business that might do something like that? Initial googling didn't turn up much...

Thanks!
