Books of Hope, a youth-literacy empowerment program based in the Mystic Housing Project, is having a book release party on Thursday, May 13th, at 6PM in the Somerville Library on Highland. The teens are releasing collections of original writing and also kicking off their 2010 Mystic Ink Tour, which will take them all over New England with their writing. Find out more here: www.booksofhope-ma.org

This event is free and open to the public, and there will be potluck-style refreshments.  This is a great opportunity to support the lower-income youth of Somerville and hear their stories in their own words.

The date for our next meetup will be Tuesday May 25th. It will be at the Burren in the back room starting at 7pm (as usual). Next month, we may move the meetup to another location as we occasionally do just to keep it interesting.

We are going back to a Tuesday. The Wednesday meetup worked really good and we will definitely have more on that day.

The 7th annual Save Our Homes Walk will be held on Sunday, May 16 at 2:00 pm with registration beginning at 1:30. The Walk begins and ends at Somerville High School’s Atrium and all are welcome and encouraged to join in our efforts to end homelessness in our City.

Organized by the Affordable Housing Organizing Committee (AHOC), the Walk raises money to help those at risk of homelessness to secure housing by providing assistance with security deposits, back rent, utilities, and/or moving costs. Last year, the Walk raised nearly $30,000. The money was used to help prevent homelessness for 162 Somerville residents.

This year, the Save Our Homes Walk hopes to raise $40,000, just a little less than the cost of keeping one family in a shelter for one year. The Walk will follow a 3-mile route through the City, past affordable housing landmarks, and will start and end at Somerville High School, 81 Highland Ave. For more information or to obtain a sponsor or pledge form, call 617-776-5931, ext 232, email spires@somervillecdc.org or visit http://www.somervillecdc.org/SCCNews/sohwalk.htm.

The Somerville Homeless Coalition, Community Action Agency of Somerville, Greater Boston Legal Services, and the Somerville Community Corporation are the principal organizers of the Save Our Homes Walk.

Many of you who live in the area may have seen the numerous signs posted for Pepe, the lost Cocker Spaniel who needs thyroid meds and an assortment of other goodies to be comfortable, and managed to sneak out on his dad last Thursday. I do not know the owner, but I inquired as to if he'd been found and offered to post the link to his site with more info to this list.

Link to Lost Dog, "Pepe"

It's easy to see how much his Dad loves him, he's been contacting local agencies and doing all he can to find him, please let him know if you've seen a dog of the above description (phone number and email address at linked page)

Thanks a ton!

This was news to me, so I bet it's news to some of you:

The laundromat on the corner of Broadway and Lowden Ave (whose proper name may or may not be "Ball Sq. Laundromat" is apparently "Broadway Dry Cleaning") does not show any posted hours, except for the wash'n'fold counter which closes at 7pm on weeknights.

However, I finally made it over there tonight at an hour when I was pretty sure they WOULD be open, and the cheerful Brazilian lady at the wash'n'fold told me that the main storefront is open until 10pm... but there is a back entrance, around the corner on Lowden, to a section of it that is kept open 24 hours. Quarters for the wash: $2 per load (I haven't priced the dryers yet).

Note that I've lived on Lowden Ave. since September and have been continuing all this time to drive back to the LaundroMax on Somerville Ave., where I used to go from my last apartment in Union Sq., just because I liked it well enough and knew it would reliably stay open until at least 11pm. But now -- 24-hour laundromat walking distance from my current place? DSIA.

We've got a female black & white "tuxedo" cat here that wandered into our yard Thursday night (May 6), looking very confused. Since it seemed to be declawed (actually, it just has very well-trimmed claws) we took it in. The vet said the cat has been spayed, and could not find a microchip. No one has reported it missing to Animal Control.

Having heard nothing from the owner, we think it is an indoor/outdoor cat, and that it is often gone for long periods. (If so, not cool -- it doesn't have long enough claws to defend itself.) It is staying at a friend's house indefinitely, and if no one claims it, he's keeping it.

We're close to the intersection of Broadway and Mass Ave in Arlington Center. If you are the owner (or have seen a "lost" poster), please call me at 434-964-7592.

The theatre opened on May 11, 1914 and has been operating ever since with only minor interruptions. Not many theatres anywhere can make this claim.

I'm looking forward to the 100th birthday celebration.

About 15 x 15 x 23 inches, about right for a medium-sized dog (and WAY too big for my cat, who likes his cozy new backpack-style carrier much better!)

End opens like door or can be removed, top can be removed too. Yes, I'm sure a shelter would love to have it, but I'm avehicular, so you're quite welcome to bring it to the shelter of your choice!
