DARBI's Midnight Madness in Davis Sq - Thursday 12/2

This Thursday, December 2nd, come to Davis Square and experience Midnight Madness! This event is put on by DARBI (Davis Area Resident/Business Initiative) every year to help support local retailers. Participating businesses include Artifaktori, Black & Blues, Boston Shaker, Dave's Fresh Pasta, Davis Squared, Kickass Cupcakes, La Chic Boutique, Magpie, Suneri, Sunshine Lucy, When Pigs Fly, and Zipcar.

Special shopping hours are from 6pm-Midnight, with many stores offering increasing discounts through the evening. Some stores often offer appetizers, cocktails & more to celebrate their customers. For example, this year, The Boston Shaker (69 Holland St) will be offering a special hot chocolate cocktail for their late night customers. In addition, Zipcar will have a tent set up in front of JP Licks and will be handing out shopping bags, with hot coffee & apple cider being donated by Johnny D’s and Redbones to keep our shoppers warm.

Look for the balloons at participating retailers & help support retail in Davis Square.

One-time housecleaning

I need a housecleaner for a one-time housecleaning on short notice (before Sunday). Any good recommendations? I'm in Winter Hill and would like to not pay more than $75. 

I know this has been asked before, but people come and go so I am looking for fresh referrals.

Moving/Wardrobe Boxes?

Does anyone have some good moving boxes, and in particular, a few wardrobe boxes that you could either give or lend me? I need to temporarily clear out a bunch of the non-maternity clothes from my closet to make room for, among other things, a few things that might actually fit right now. (Oh yeah, and still on the look-out for more maternity clothes, too. :)

If you are saving them for your next move, I'd be happy to return them in a few months. Thanks!

Room for rent near Davis Square

Hi there, davis_square,

One of my roommates is leaving at the end of the month, so we have a room available on January 1 in our lovely house--5 minutes walking from Ball Square! The rent is $600/month + utilities. Our landlord lives right upstairs, and is very quick about attending to any issues. Our kitchen is huge, and there are a washer and dryer right inside the apartment ($1/load). I have a friendly cat who could get along with another friendly cat.

My remaining roommate and I are 24 and 28, respectively. We're pretty chill and like to relax with a glass of wine at the end of the day but have independent lives.

Porter Square Visioning process open meeting

I just attended a portion of tonight's Porter Square Visioning process open meeting.  I was bemused by the fact that right from the start of the meeting people were objecting to the proposal and intrusion into their neighborhood even though nothing had yet been proposed.  The presentation was limited to a set of observations that nearly all of the commercial property surrounding Porter Sq. is in Cambridge, all recent development in the area in Somerville has been residential, and that a growing proportion of tax revenue from the area comes from residential, rather than commercial property.  The presenter essentially ended with the question: are we OK with that or do we want to change it?  After 10 minutes of uninteresting comments on that, I left.

Thai Kitchen / Pho House has closed

Thai Kitchen (aka Thai and Mandarin Kitchen, aka Pho House), on Mass. Ave. near Dover Street in North Cambridge, is no more. A note on the door from the owners, dated yesterday, says that they have closed the restaurant "for personal reasons" after eight years.

I enjoyed many meals here, and I'll miss it, especially since it was the closest restaurant of any kind to my apartment building, I hope another ethnic eatery will move in to replace it.
