I'm thinking of volunteering at a pet shelter.  Looking for recommendations.  Basically I'm just interested in being around cats.

Normally my strong bias is to stick geographically to Somerville or Cambridge or other close towns.  However there don't seem to be very many shelters, and all of them seem to be no-kill, which might be a little too much intensity for me to take on right now for a volunteer activity.  At one point I volunteered at MSPCA in Jamaica Plain, I was impressed with their organization, but at least at that time, the commute there was a bit too much.  I'm thinking maybe the Animal Rescue League of Boston might be more reasonable in that regard.

I usually think that having a relationship with people who provide intermittent services is a little overrated, but from the moment I first walked in to Skyline Drycleaner in Ball Square (across from the dueling breakfasteries), John made me feel welcome and valued. He knows me by sight, which is not terribly hard, but he knows my husband too.

They are open until 7pm on weekdays and also have a drop off chute. The VIP program is ridiculously easy to join and gets you a drop off bag and monthly billing. I get an emailed receipt when my clothes are processed and another when they are ready. Turnaround time is usually 1 day for normal things.

Men's shirts are $2.25 for laundry and pressing--we can't do them at home for that. All the other prices are reasonable. He has my wedding dress right now. (ETA: and he did a great job with it.)

They advertise pickup and delivery, but I haven't used it.

I would not mention this, but there's a groupon today, and if you haven't already got a regular dry cleaner, maybe this is the one for you. Ball Square, Broadway.

Hi all,
We have a large air conditioner to give away. Someone gave it to us in a hurry when they were moving, but it's too big for any of our windows. It still worked at the point that we got it. It's very big and heavy, and unfortunately the metal frame that helps hold it in the window stayed in its former apartment, so some construction/modifications might be required to install it safely.

Details:
Kenmore model 580.70122000
Cooling capacity 12,000 Btu/hr
Watts 1,220W
Dimensions: 15 x 22 x 24

The difficulty is that it's in a second floor apartment (by Tufts/Powderhouse), and who ever wants it will probably need two people to take it away (it weighs a ton). I am not strong enough to safely help you down the stairs with it. Would like to arrange a time this weekend or an evening this week. Please send an email to c m beranek at gmail (remove spaces) if you'd like it.

Hey Kids,
My wife and I are getting a much needed night out and want to do a little tour of Davis for cocktails. Just thought I'd reach out to the community and see what your favorite cocktails are that our local restaurants/bars are serving these days. We will be on foot and want to keep it to just Davis. Thanks for the input!

I belong to Planet Fitness in Porter Square.  I can't get radio reception on my Ipod Nano in the gym, at least not WBUR.  I guess this is because it is one floor down.  Is this a universal experience?  Just wondering if others with different devices have better luck.  Can't beat the Planet Fitness price but having the radio really helps the workout go faster.   I'm tired of all my music- I guess I could load podcasts onto my Nano.

I'm currently looking for a photographer who would be interested in shooting a wedding ceremony and about 10-12 posed shots post ceremony next July (07/07/12 to be exact). The reason I'm looking so early is because we're planning to move at the end of this month (to California) but are still having a Davis Square area wedding since both our families live locally. Preferably, we'd like to meet the photographer in person before we move.

We would probably also be open to an enthusiast with a good camera as we're only looking for about an hour and half of actual shooting time and we're not looking for anything super fancy for post aside from a copy of the raw images. Professionals are also welcome but we're aware that Saturdays in July are busy and that some might not be interested in shooting only for an hour and half when they could be shooting for 4 or 5 hours on a higher paying job. But, hey, maybe there's someone out there who'd like a lighter day.
