I'm moving to East Somerville on August 1, which is a Sunday. I'll be all set for parking that day, obviously, and the first thing I plan on doing Monday morning is going to get a parking pass for my car.

I've been thinking and thinking of ways to keep from getting ticketed over Sunday night into Monday morning and I'm coming up empty. Does anyone have any suggestions? Can I apply for the "resident moving into Somerville" parking pass before I actually move?

Any tickets that you get can be brought down to the Parking Office and they will void them when you pay for a resident permit.

According to the city web site, there is a special permit at no charge.
http://www.somervillema.gov/section.cfm?org=traffic&page=916

"Massachusetts Resident Moving into Somerville (7 days) no charge
This pass allows time for the new resident to acquire a change of vehicle registration to Somerville and obtain a parking permit for their new location.

Out-of-State Resident Moving into Somerville (14 days) no charge
This pass allows time for the new resident to acquire a change of vehicle registration to Somerville and obtain a parking permit for their new location."

Best of luck with the move!

We moved last June and I believe we got the temporary permit a few days before we moved. I think you just need to bring a copy of your lease to the Traffic & Parking Office [in addition to your vehicle registration]. I remember it being really easy. :-]

I got an Out-of-State one about a week before I moved. As long as you have your lease and registration you should be golden :)

I have absolutely nothing to say about parking, but I just had to say that I LOVE your icon. It's just so striking; it shows fencing at it's best, both athleticism and grace.

I used to fence in high school, sorry. :) But, seriously-- amazing icon.

except that that far forward of a lunge (the kneecap is in front of the ankle), is bad form and damaging to the knee.

That, I buy.

Mind you, when I fenced, I'm sure my form sucked more in lunges.

This may be why my knees hurt when I run.

Ahh, true. Not to mention they are leaning way, way too far forward (with their torso facing downward, at least), and WAY too much weight is on their front foot, so there's little hope for a balanced recovery. And it's far too off balance to be the start of a flèche, as well. But, for its artistic structure, I still like the picture. :)

You can always start fencing again

Wow, they have rates for dropping in?? That's amazing. Most places I've seen have fees of $600+, which is way too much for me, but with drop-in days, it might be possible to stop by and see if I want to pick it up again. That's an amazing feature. I'll have to tell my fiance (who also used to fence) about that... we might just drop by. :)

You won't find a friendlier place to fence

Floor fees typically apply to non-club members who stop by to fence. Come take a "test-drive" on an open fencing night - we have equipment to borrow - and A/C blowing. Wednesday night is open fencing for epee (the most popular weapon at the club).

You will find a LOT of ex-collegiate and high school fencers, some amazing current and past competition winners, some married couples, a grandma or two and a bunch of people trying to cathartically bury their points in each other.

We have a number of members from the Davis. Sq. area.

That's AMAZING. Personally, I fenced foil or sabre, and my fiance fenced foil, but I'll have to mention it to him. We both loved the sport, but it's tricky to find someplace to fence that doesn't charge astronomical fees. And since we're not in a situation where we know we'd be fencing three times a week, that was just unfeasible. But this?? Amazing. Really, I'm so excited.

I have my own gear (though my old foil needs to be retired, poor thing), but my fiance doesn't, so borrowing equipment would be perfect (does that include jackets, masks and gloves?). And since we're getting married in a couple months, the cathartic point-burying isn't too much of a stretch. :) We've never actually fenced one another, so. That might have to happen. :D

Thank you SO much for the suggestion; I'm definitely going to have to look into this.

Yeah, it's amazing. And the images from the sport are just phenomenal.

Park at a meter, and move the car or pay the meter by 8 AM. That's the only way to park overnight without a permit in Somerville.

From: [identity profile] oneagain.livejournal.com
Doesn't that depend on the meter? I thought there are some meters that you can't park at between 2:30am and 6 or 8am without a permit, though I might be mistaken.

From: [identity profile] boblothrope.livejournal.com
Yes, but some meters have no such restriction.

When I moved to Somerville many years ago, I was able to set up a "grace period" over the phone. I got ticketed, but the people at the traffic and parking office dismissed the tickets when I picked up my resident sticker.

My advice is to call the parking and traffic office (617-666-3311 is the general city number, if you're calling from outside Somerville) and talk to them. They've always been very helpful and polite to me, far more so that I expected.

Do you know anyone who lives in Somerville and might have a visitor pass?

I was going to say, "park overnight at Alewife and retrieve your car later on Monday". I never heard of the special "Moving into Somerville" permit. That's kind of... surprisingly not-horrible of them.

(My expectations for the humanity level of the Somerville Traffic & Parking Office have gotten dangerously low. They get worse every time I encounter a new stoplight on my carefully-engineered stoplight-avoiding commute route. Or worse, shortly thereafter, a new No Turn on Red sign adding insult to injury at the same intersection. *grits teeth*)

The higher level decision makers are disappointing me these days, but the rank and file people who work the windows at the Holland Street office and who answer the phone have always been very helpful to me.

From: [identity profile] pierceheart.livejournal.com
I agree with you about the people at the windows, but not about the PCO's or the people handling appeals; see the incident where someone was ticketed for a snow emergency violation BEFORE the snow emergency ... and the hearing office said "this ticket wasn't wrong, but we'll give you the appeal this time, don't do it again." I think that's bullshit and needs to be fixed pronto.

Point taken -- my experiences there have been fine as well -- but it doesn't decrease my ire for the people making the policy decisions higher up.

In other parts of the country, a traffic light doesn't at a minor side street imply a traffic disaster.

I couldn't believe how they took the terrible light at Somerville Ave/Mossland/Beacon and made it so much worse.

That light needs to die!! I keep saying I'm going to write a letter.

I wrote one a while back. I did get a response -- they said they were between traffic engineers, so they'd investigate my suggestions and get back to me after a long while. I never got another response.

Sundays Free parking

Hi,

I'm not sure about your neighborhood, but on Sundays in Teele Square and West Somerville you can park without a permit until 8am.

Also if you have met your neighbors maybe they have a parking pass you could borrow for the couple-a-days!
