Where can one drop off spare clothing in the Davis area? Donations, consignment (other than Poor Little Rich Girl, and bonus points if the place doesn't require an appointment 4 months down the line), etc?

The Goodwill on Elm Street takes donations. No limits on when you can drop them off as far as I know. I've even left stuff out front early in the morning before they open.

They will write up a slip for a tax-deduction, if you want one, as well.

As someone who's walked past many an open donation that was ravaged by curious folks at the Goodwill's interest, I think it'd be more appropriate to donate when they are open and their staff can place them in the appropriate area instead of having to pick them up from the sidewalk later.

Ah, but when you have carfuls of stuff, it is easiest to drive over when one can park in front. When I've had just a few things I've brought them when they are open. But when I was moving and had way too much stuff to give away, it seemed the better choice to drop it off when I could (about 8:30 am, so it's not like the stuff sat there for hours and hours) than to not drop it off at all (which would probably have been what would've happened if I'd limited myself to trying to go only during store hours.)

If you want easier parking, the Salvation Army on Broadway (in Magoun Sq) has a parking lot...you can back right up to the donation trailer.

They really really don't want you to do that. It makes the place look terrible and also encourages random people to steal what you donate. Please donate when they are open.

The Methodist church a block up college ave has a shelter that takes donations of pretty much anything you can think of.

Wow, I didn't know that. That's great to know, since that church has done a lot of favors (esp re free meeting space) for several groups I'm part of, and I'd be glad to be able to give back to them. Do you know if there are special donation hours, or where in the church you have to go to make a drop?

If you go up whatever side street the church is on, there's a door with two or three doorbells. One of them is labelled "shelter" or something like that. I've never had a problem on a weekend afternoon just going up to that door and ringing the bell. The shelter's in the basement, I think.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters (http://www.bbbsfoundation.org) has many pickups scheduled in various areas at this time of year. I'm in Dorchester and I got a card for a pickup this coming Wednesday. Call them at 1-800-483-5503 to see if they have a Davis Square run coming up soon.

consignments

I've consigned clothes at PLRG and Garment District. If you want to go this route, best to plan ahead; their appointment schedules do get booked up. I usually plan: August= fall stuff; November=winter; January= spring; April= summer. Both are selective; PLRG more so than the GD, but what PLRG accepts, most of my stuff has sold.
My experience with the GD has been so-so, and it's a pain to get there to reclaim my unsold stuff. The GD terms can be found on their website: http://www.garmentdistrict.com/consign/consign_rules.htm

Not to say you shouldn't still try, but my experience was different -- they accepted about 15 items from me and sold about 3, and since the check was only $28 they didn't automatically mail it to me; I had to go ask them for it. I never got the rest of my items back because I forgot there wouldn't be a reminder call to come pick them up after 60 days, which meant I I forfeited them. I totally accept that this was my own fault and I do understand why they have that policy, but it wasn't a very good experience all things considered, esp. considering how long I had to wait to get an appointment in the first place. I just hope they gave my stuff that they didn't sell within the 60 days to charity. Just to clarify though, I still love them and shop there all the time, I just wouldn't try consigning there again. I'd try Garment District except their consigning hours conflict 100% with my working hours, which makes it tough to get an appointment. Sigh. Goodwill it is.

I had a great experience at PLRG.

They accepted about 25 things from me, I believe I made about $150. Which is WAY more than I anticipated.

The Garment District does not consign any longer, they are buying outright. 30 or 35% of the selling price I believe, I suppose you have to trust that they are being truthful with the selling price they tell you.

I schedule ahead with PLRG, everytime I call there the owner remembers me, and if I have to wait a little while she is very apologetic. I've seen the appointment book up close (while booking) and it's shocking how many people she is juggling appointment wise.

All and all I would say if you need low cash quick call the Garment district. If you want to make some quality cash call PLRG. Really really high end stuff, call The Closet on Newbury street.

Thanks for the info about Garment District, I should try that. I certainlybelieve that other people have had good experiences with PLRG -- and it wasn't even that mine was a bad experience, just really unsuccessful. So obviously it's not the same for everyone who tries it.

If you have women's size 10, or various men's sizes, the Pan9 musicians collective in Allston had a fire in their loft space yesterday and could use them - there's someone taking donations in the Harvard Sq area. See http://www.par-don.com/pan9/ (http://www.par-don.com/pan9/) for details and who to contact.

There's a drop box near the Benjapon/Subway rest. on Elm St.

Does that box belong to 'Planet Aid'? If so, please don't donate to it. The organization it supports is highly dubious. See Tvind Alert for more information on it.

Wow, I had no idea. I used to shop at the old Planet Aid store all the time. Now I guess I should be glad it's gone. That sucks majorly (just went to the site and read the Toronto Star article there).

Why is it that so many charitable operations are dodgy? Is it easier to prey on people when they're doing good? Not that you have to take a stab at answering those or anything :).

consignment stores

Hi,

I used to work at Second Time Around in Harvard Square.

We used to be consistently booked about 6-7 weeks ahead there.

It used to drive me crazy that people looked at it like a right, like they should be able to come in that day with their items. Consignment is a service, so sometimes you might have to wait for an appointment.

My roommate consigns at the Garment District and at Poor little Rich girl. She usually has to wait about 6 weeks for the garment District, and about a month for PLRG. She makes about $300 extra a month from both places combined.

I used to have people freak out and yell at me at Second Time every day because they wanted to just walk in. What people didn't understand was that I was manning about 40 calls a day, everyone wants to make money!

Anyways, I guess my point is, people need to understand that to make money at a quality consignment shop, you might have to wait a little while. THey are working hard to make YOU money.

Also, as a side note, my roomie got a letter from the Garment District saying they have switched to buy outright. THey are in Kendall Square.

Good luck!
