Can I still get a Brown School card for this year? If so, where? Thanks!
[identity profile] sungold123.livejournal.com
I'm getting my own classroom this year after being a long-term sub for 2 years (I teach middle school math and English) and I'm looking for furniture and books to fill my room.

I'm primarily looking for a bookcase/bookshelf (my school doesn't have a library for the middle schoolers...!), a fun patterned area rug, and a cushioned bench with storage underneath. I am also seeking middle school appropriate books to fill the bookcase (chapter books).

Please let me know if you have any of these items for sale and I'd love to chat. Thanks!

Don't forget to stop by the Brown School PTA booth for your 2014/2015 Brown School Community Card!  We will be in Seven Hills Park, behind the Holland St T entrance.  The cards are still just $10, and give you year long savings at many popular Davis Sq restaurants and shops (listed behind cut below).  Thanks to Rockland Trust who sponsors the printing of the cards, 100% of the money earned goes directly to the PTA of Somerville's oldest public school, located at the intersection of Willow & Kidder Ave.

So, I'm supposed to start adding some lap swimming to my weekly routine, and as I poked around for what pools are convenient to either my home or work, I stumbled across this one, which seems to be perfectly situated between me and POrter Square T station. I'd probably go after work (6:30-7pm arrival for 30 mins of swimming) or on Saturday. I'm a slow swimmer, but if there're too many people to even circle swim in the lane effectively, I'm likely to get a little frustrated. Anybody using this pool currently/recently? Any thoughts on crowding/schedule? How about the locker rooms?

Agassiz Preschool is just up the street from Davis Square! This preschool has been in the area for 30 years, and in Somerville for 4.

Agassiz Preschool presents an afternoon of art, music, crafts and festive fundraising. Join us for a neighborhood event celebrating creativity in our community with live music, a photo booth, crafts for kids, and an amazing silent auction featuring donations by local artists and businesses. What I find most amazing is the wide variety of styles of the art -- from beaded jewelry to textiles and ceramics, to many impressive prints and oil paintings.

Agassiz Preschool is located at 184 Summer Street at the corner of Spring in Somerville. Join us from 2-5pm this Saturday. Free admission.

The folks at Donor's Choose forwarded this project to me, and I figured I'd signal boost... Mrs. Karlin at Somerville High School is looking for 45 copies of Catcher in the Rye for her kids to keep, highlight, mark up, cuddle with, etc. There's a ton of worthy projects in the area, but this one's special to me because I've always been a fervent re-reader and was privileged enough to grow up in a home with books readily available. I think this project could make a big difference in the kids' education and, for those who really get something from the book, it would let them keep it and re-read it long after the class ends. I don't think I can say enough about how much books saved my life during some hellish times as a kid. Anyways, the link's above, and you can donate literally any amount. If the project isn't funded, the money is "given back to you" to spend on another project (I don't think they recredit it to your credit card). Check it out.

It's that time of year again!  Brown School Community Discount Cards are now available at Mr. Crepe and Davis Squared, both located in Davis Square.  $10 will get you a year of discounts at local restaurants and shops. (Complete list under LJ-cut below)   We are happy to add several new vendors this year:  Brooklyn Boulders, iYo, Soundbites, The Biscuit and The Book Shop.

All of the money from the card sales goes to the Benjamin G. Brown School PTA.   The Brown School is a public K-6 school located at the corner of Willow & Kidder Ave.  Mr. Crepe and D-Squared are very generous to sell the cards for us.  They do not get any $$ from selling the cards.  Students from the school will also be selling the cards in mid-September.

Thank you for supporting the Brown School!

Ave.
Meet-and-Greet with refreshments from 6 to 6:30 p.m.

SOMERVILLE – Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone invites residents to the Spring 2013

Seven neighborhood meetings, one in each ward, will be held in the coming weeks.
Mayor Curtatone, ward and at-large aldermen, members of the Somerville
Police Department, and City staff will discuss issues important to residents and
take their questions. Topics will range from crime and safety reports, rodent
control, and neighborhood improvements such as road, park, and library projects

the city budgeting process, and a word from the Mayor on how the City is using
data and a systems approach to improve services and tackle new issues.
Refreshments will be served at a meet-and-greet before each meeting, where

From http://www.somervillema.gov/snow:

"The City’s snow emergency will be lifted as of 8:00 P.M. Tuesday (tonight). Residents parked in municipal lots will have until 10:00 P.M. this evening to move their cars in order for plows to clear snow for the lots. Please note that, while parking on the even side of the street will be allowed, there must, by law, be at least 10 feet of passage for emergency vehicles. Residents are asked to be particularly careful on secondary roads that may still be narrow. Any cars potentially impeding access may be subject to ticketing and towing.

Additionally, due to improved conditions citywide, thanks to high temperatures and the ongoing work by DPW crews, Somerville Public Schools WILL be in session on Wednesday, February 13th.

For more information, please call 311, visit City’s Web site, www.somervillema.gov, or follow our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/SomervilleCity) and Twitter feeds (@SomervilleCity, @311Somerville)."

just got this e-mail:

Hello, this is Jackie Rossetti from the City of Somerville with important snow emergency-related information for Monday, February 11th. Due to high snow accumulations and ongoing work to clear public streets and walkways, and the forecast for more potential snow events this week, the City’s snow emergency will REMAIN IN EFFECT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. Residents may continue to park in municipal or school lots until the snow emergency is lifted.

Trash and recycling pickup schedules will continue as normal this week. DPW and contracted crews will continue to clear snow around-the-clock over the next week, including removing high snow banks that impair visibility, as well as at bus stops and crosswalks.

To ensure safety of all residents, particularly children during this time, school has been canceled through Wednesday. More information and updates will be available via the City website, Facebook page and Twitter feeds, which can be found at http://www.somervillema.gov/socialmedia. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work to ensure safety and accessibility throughout the City.

Oh, and it's good for a year (now until the end of Nov. 2013) and the actual card has the correct number of days in November. :)

Many of you are probably familiar with the Brown School discount cards good at such places like Dave's Fresh Pasta and Mr. Crepe. Well, the Kennedy School (Elm St. near Porter Sq) is starting a similar card but with (mostly) different vendors. Now you can support two local schools and save money for yourself and support local businesses all at the same time! For $10 you get a sturdy plastic card showing the places you can get discounts for an entire year. How does 10% off all purchases at Tags Hardware or the newly-moved Stellabella Toys sound? As well as 10% off at the Dunkin' Donuts in Davis Sq. and yummy treats at 10% off at Lyndell's. If you are interested please email me at karen (at) mkmiller (dot) org. Thanks for supporting our Somerville Public Schools! Complete listing of discounts below the cut.

Subject pretty much says it all. Trash pickup is *on* for tomorrow according to 311. I put ours out, but it doesn't look like anyone else within blocks has done so yet.

While trying to find the answer on the City's web site, I discovered schools will remain closed. Boston and Cambridge schools will be open, but a lot of others are closed, too.

Even if you don't have school age children, there are many things you can do to help the schools that take very little effort and no additional expense. These are the programs the Brown School participates in. (K-6 public school, at the intersection of Kidder & Willow). I am sure most of the other local schools also participate in these programs. Use this list to help the school of your choice. Please add anything I have missed!
