Parts and Crafts + Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society have teamed up on a new project -- starting a Honk-Style marching band for kids!   This group is about making joyful noise with other people.  We're sticking with simple, danceable tunes; we're learning by ear; and we're learning together.  We welcome children, families, and anyone else that wants to be a part of a good groove.  We welcome experienced musicians as well as people who are new to their horn.

At the moment, we are calling ourselves the Underage Marching Menace.   We don't have an official site yet, but we have a Tumblr page!   Take a listen to hear what we're about: http://kids-street-band.tumblr.com/

DETAILS:
Where: The Clarendon Hill Church at 155 Powderhouse Blvd.  (map:http://g.co/maps/qejrb)
When: Sundays from 3-5PM
Who: You, and anyone you know!
Mailing List: http://groups.google.com/group/parts_and_crafts_band

RSVPs aren't required, but we'd love to know if you plan come (either by email or phone: 617.575.9219)!   To answer some other questions...
  • If you already have your own instrument, great!  Bring it with you!  If not, feel free to show up anyway to sing, stomp, crash a cymbal, or try some other instruments on for size.  If you're looking for a particular instrument, let us know!
  • All instruments are welcome, as long as they can move!  As we are a parading group at heart, we want instruments that can march, parade, and move around outside--especially as the weather gets warmer!
  • The band is facilitated by members of the Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band <http://slsaps.org> along with some of the folks at Parts & Crafts <http://partsandcrafts.org>

All are welcome - no experience required.   Next rehearsal is this Sunday  (as in, almost today!) from 3-5 p.m.   Hope to see you there!

A message from Benjamin G. Brown School Principal Kathleen Seward

I am writing to alert you to an incident that was reported after school yesterday.

After dismissal yesterday, January 24th, a fifth grade student was approached on the community bike path going into Davis Square by a man walking his dog. The man allegedly asked the student if he/she wanted candy. When the student responded no, the man asked if the student was sure/ The student said yes, and then the man continued walking his dog along the bike bath away from the square. There were no other words exchanged and no physical contact. When the student arrived home, the parent/guardian was alerted and a police report was filed.

The police have been working with the family and with me to follow up on the report. In the coming days, there will be an increased police presence along the bike path during the time of dismissal. As a school, we will be reviewing stranger danger guidelines with all students. If you see or hear anything related or similar to this incident, please do just as this family did and alert the police as well as me. As always, do not hesitate to call me with questions or for further clarification.

Best,
Kathleen Seward

I'm looking to donate to one or more local holiday toy drives, anyone know of one or more going on ?

Thanks !

Just a 'heads up' that many of the public school kids were sent home with Unicef boxes. If you are passing out candy on Halloween and are inclined to donate, keep your pocket change handy...

Signs in the window of 200 Elm Street say:
Knucklebones
for the love of play!

Opening October 2011

Knucklebones retail store and play spaces will be Greater Boston's most unique and developmentally appropriate venue for athletic products and programming for infants and young children. The store, purveying athletically inclined products and picture books, will allow children to try each product and allow parents, care givers and friends to handle each product and see the color range offered.

Two spaces, known as The Yard, a 30'x40' green space; and The Bowl, a 20'x20' indoor space, will allow all our clients to test and experience each product. In addition, these spaces will be available for planned programming.

www.Knucklebones.us

Hey, I didn't write this ad copy, I'm just reproducing it here. I guess it's some sort of fancy toy store crossed with an indoor playground. The web site makes them sound more like an event planner, and doesn't even mention a retail store.

Meanwhile, The Caning Shoppe has moved to a much smaller space down the road at 55 Elm Street, next to Big Fish Little Fish. I think that space was a used bookstore for about 20 minutes.

Please, forgive me if this is out of line, and by all means, feel free to delete it or ask me to. I'm really not sure if this is appropriate or not, so I'm going for it and hoping for the best.

A couple of days ago, I posted to the community offering a few coupons and a sample of infant formula that I got in the mail, but do not want. I know and understand that breast feeding is a hot button issue with a few people, and I expected a little discussion. That's fine and good.

What I did NOT expect was four separate PMs from people essentially telling me that I am an awful person for offering to give these things to people, rather than throwing them away. Well, one of them wasn't quite so... vicious, and instead URGED me to just throw them away, but in the others, I was called everything from a "formula company shill" to an "anti-feminist" to "a person who clearly finds no value in the bond between a mother and her baby."

Come on, people. I'm nothing more than a woman who is 38 weeks pregnant, received something in the mail I thought someone else might find some value in, and thought I'd do something nice by offering to pass it on to someone who might need or want it. I really DO appreciate those of you who sent me supportive messages, offering lactation consulting or referral to such a service, should I need it. I, however, think it's pretty out of line for people to jump down my throat over what was nothing more than what I thought was a nice freebie to someone who wanted it, given that I did not have any use for it.

I'm sorry if my posting the other day offended anyone. It wasn't my intention. That said, some of the responses I received were wholly out of line, and I urge you to think about what you're actually saying to someone, in the context in which is it being said before you jump down their throats and make them feel like they're doing something wrong over something as small as some coupons.

Next weekend we're having a neighborhood yard sale, but since I don't live in Davis, I thought I would list a few things here to see if anyone was interested before they went to the lawn. If you are interested, I'll be working the day shift at the Dilboy Post this Saturday and can bring them there for pickup.

Pictures on request, though the cribs are disassembled.

This year we're launching a series of two-week themed sessions, featuring special guests who will come in to work on a topic in-depth. Registration is still open for all sessions -- interested parties should visit www.partsandcrafts,org, or contact Katie at katie [at] partsandcrafts.org.

Here's what we've got planned for the summer!

July 4th through July 8th — Girls’ Invention Week!

Sexism is bad and gender-politics are complicated. Heck, gender-identity is complicated! We’d like all of our programs to be totally diverse, but we think that, in order to get there, we need to spend some time reaching out specifically to underrepresented groups and making spaces that feel safe and empowering and fun for them. So far, running girls-only programs has been one of the most effective things we’ve been able to do to work on this.

July 11 through July 22 – Things that Move**

We’re surrounded by mechanical systems. Motors, gears, cams, crankshafts, pulleys, linkages — the building blocks of mechanical systems are really fascinating, and hands-on demonstrations of engineering principles and ingenuity.  So we’ll make things that move. Kinetic sculptures and motorized toy cars and catapults and streetbeests.

**Note:  This session is basically at capacity for those not participating in the teen program -- if you're interested, email us for enrollment information.

July 18 through July 22 -- Things that MOve:: Teen Program

Participants in our teen program will split their time between Parts and Crafts and Sprout, a communtiy science workshop in Davis Square.
Working with a dedicated set of counselors, and having access to the tools and expertise of the Sprout community, campers will be able to design and execute larger scale projects of their own devising and design and to think more about how to deploy the products of their work in ways that mean something to them or their wider communities.

July 25 through August 5 – Music Experiments and Experimental Music

Come and make your own musical instruments, and make our musical instruments do weird and wonderful things! We’ll make different kinds of musical instruments, acoustic and electronic, simple and complex, hand-powered and bike-powered. And then we’ll learn to play them together as an ensemble and take to the streets of Davis Square.

August 8 through August 19 – Imaginary Worlds

Sometimes creativity is designing a really clever mechanical linkage or solution to a programming problem, and sometimes it’s inventing a magic spell or a fascinating creature. We’ll design alien worlds and alien life and make movies about them. We’ll also play games and tell stories set in fantasy worlds of our own devising. And, of course, design magical and alien artifacts — wands that shoot sparks out of the tips, rockets for aerial photography, and spectrometers and filters to see invisible things in our own world.

August 22 through September 2 – Life: Natural and Artificial

Robots and wildlife! We’ll make autonomous robots and program computers to simulate living things and then we’ll go outside, explore the urban ecosystem, garden, hike around Somerville gathering wild edible plants and cook ourselves a snack!

For more details or to register, visit www.partsandcrafts.org
