(crossposted to a couple local groups)

Starting tonight is the Independent Film Festival of Boston, which will be screening about 60 feature-length films and 40 short features. They're showing films for the next week at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square, the Brattle Theatre, and the Coolidge Corner Theatre.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to catch a lot of great independent films that would otherwise be very hard to find. Check it out! http://www.iffboston.org

Hey, I'm going to be homeless in a bit more than a week, and I'm wondering if there is a shelter in the area that might actually be not too depressing to stay in. Anyone have any experience with them? I know nothing about them, other than having been given a list of ones in the Boston area by the psych emergency department at the Cambridge Health Alliance hospital a while back.

Any recommendations or advice on the shelter system would be greatly appreciated! :-)

I am going out of town on May 1st and need to find a new cat sitter. I was using Cambridge Critter Sitters, but I've moved since my last arrangment with them and the more I used them the less satisfied I was with the service. Can anybody recommend in home cat sitters they like?

I need a few quotes on a small landscaping job for my condo association.  We are looking to have an existing stone patio replaced with new pavers.  We need the ground to be leveled and to have weed-reducing mesh put down before the new pavers are installed.  It's a small job but we need it done properly as the existing patio is a mess due to being done poorly.  I see Crowley's Clippers signs on the rotaries, and I like what they did in Powderhouse, but they are Medford based and I'd like to hire someone in Somerville.  Anyone know of local landscapers and have first-hand experience?

(BTW mods:  I looked thru the tags "local landscape" and "home repair" but didn't see anything.  Sorry if this has been posted before.)

On Sunday, I will be participating in the Save Our Homes Walk to Prevent Homelessness in Somerville. It is run by the Somerville Affordable Housing Organizing Committee (AHOC), an advocacy coalition made up of Somerville residents and community organizations including the Somerville Homeless Coalition, Community Action Agency of Somerville, Cambridge and Somerville Legal Services, and others. They help those at risk of homelessness secure housing by providing assistance with security deposits, back rent, or moving costs that may require emergency funds (such as the situation of the poster earlier today). Last year's walk raised over $28,000.

I am soliciting pledges to support the AHOC (and meet my team's goal). Contributions are tax-deductible and any amount is appreciated. If you'd like to donate, you can get money to me via the PayPal button below (fee-free account, so it's cash transfer only, no credit card), drop off a check, or give me cash.

Thanks for your consideration.

I, along with some friends, am looking for a 3-4 bedroom apartment near Davis Sq.  We are all grad students and are looking for a place under $1800 if 3 bedroom and or under $2400 if 4 bedroom.  One of us lives in Somerville currently and is available to look at places this weekend.  The rest of us are moving up from Asheville, North Carolina.  Thanks for your help!

Did you know that your ticket stubs for the Brattle Theatre as well as the Somerville Theatre allow you 2 for 1 rentals any day of the week (both new releases and old)?

Anyway, I have way more Brattle stubs than I can ever use at the video store and I'd be willing to turn over several of them. Let me know if you want some of them and we can pick a time to meet. I can also turn over some of them to anyone that wants them at the next [livejournal.com profile] davis_square meet-up.

There were all these people on the "park bench" side of the square with jester caps on, around 8 tonight. Some of them were in black tie despite the joker cap, while the others had T-shirts that said "HOOL". There was one guy in the middle who looked like their leader.

Any idea what this is? More street theater, or something like the Cacophony Society?

Dear Fans of the Davis Square Farmers Market,

A month or so ago, I posted about a Friends group that would be forming to support the Davis Square Farmers Market (I'm a volunteer with Mass Farmers Markets and I work just outside of Davis). The Friends group would provide advocacy, promotion, and excitement for the market (which is on Wednesdays starting next month!) and many big and small ways.

We had a great introductory meeting in March - there was a lot of enthusiasm and plenty of new ideas! Please join us for our second meeting, as we decide how we're going to make some great new things happen at the Davis Market this season!

When: Monday, April 28th, 5:45 to 7:00 PM
Where: Boloco (a supporter of ours - on Elm Street, towards Porter Square)

Please tell your friends, bring one along, and let me know if you can make it to the meeting - or even if you'd just like to be on our e-mail list. Please remember that even small actions - forwarding an e-mail, telling a friend about an event - can make a big difference. You can be a Friend of Davis in many ways, even if you don't have the time for a big commitment.

Thanks, and Happy Spring!

I'm soon to be moving from Dorchester to Somerville. I am looking to collect information on moving trucks and movers. Anyone want to point me towards a good, reliable, and affordable moving company?
