Hi, all! I wanted to share a (rather quickly) upcoming event that promises to be a lot of fun, if our rehearsals so far have been any indication! (Look for me; I'll be the brown violinist. :) )

The Philharmonic Funk Foundation is a soul, disco and funk machine that consists of 44 people. With a rhythm section, a full string orchestra and all the horns and winds you can think of, it has everything needed to perform even the most heavily orchestrated disco hits and soul ballads live for you. The original Dutch orchestra has performed on all the big stages and festivals in the Netherlands, and now, the Boston branch is excited to have you here for their first performance.

(No relation to the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, FYI.)

Happy bike week!

Are you missing out on bike breakfasts, wishing you’d planned ahead so you could score as many free bagels as possible? (psst - breakfast locations are here)

Well it’s not too late – the best event of Bike Week isn’t technically during Bike Week…it’s the 4th Annual Ciclismo Classico Bike Travel Film Festival and it’s NEXT MONDAY, May 20th.

The festival is a benefit for Massbike, and it is the only film festival in the USA that will make you want to drop everything and ride off into the sunset (or at least head away for a weekend). This year, our Grand Jury Prize winner is a fascinating story of a 23-year old Boston mother of three who cycled the globe in just 15 months – in 1894!

We are also the only film festival to feature a Cookie Showcase of the area’s best bakeries - which is what happens when event planners have a sweet tooth.

One lucky attendee will win an amazing door prize – a spot on Ciclismo Classico’s Piedmont and the Lake District tour (a $2,800 value!). We’ll also be raffling off an eclectic collection of cool bike jerseys to outfit you for your next ride.

Details:

Monday, May 20th, 2013

Regent Theatre, Arlington MA (7 Medford Street)

Social hour 6:00 PM; Films begin 7:00 PM

Tickets $10 in advance, $15 at the door

Boston Free Radio, your friendly member-run Internet radio station over in Union Square, is having its fall orientation for new radio hosts on Monday, Sept. 17 from 8-10pm.  Anyone who is a Mass. resident is welcome to become a member and host a show -- no experience necessary!  We operate as a service of Somerville Community Access Television -- our studios are in the SCATV building at 90 Union Square.

We encourage all our hosts to create whatever kind of show they like -- there are no FCC regulations so it really is free speech radio!  We provide training to use the station's equipment and software, and we work with hosts to develop ideas for their programs and ways to build listenership.

We're looking for people to do recorded programs as well as live shows in the studio, so even if you can't commit to a live program at a fixed time every week you can still host a show!  Podcasts and other recorded series are welcome.  Come to the orientation on Monday and find out more!

We decided that Somerville and our side of the river needed a really fun dance party. We grew tired of the same clubs, same long lines and most of all the same songs! The sound at Samba Club is ridiculously good!

Our sound is diverse. Lots of Cumbia from Mexico and Brazilian Baile Funk. The theme is BASS which makes us move!

Our first two parties was a grand success!!! Come check out our 3rd Party and make it even better!

On October 15, the Somerville Bicycle Committee led a bike tour of places throughout Somerville where art is produced, exhibited, or performed. If you didn't ride with us last week, you can take a self-guided tour anytime with our maps and pamphlet:

http://somervillebikes.org/documents/TourMap.pdf - the entire bike tour route
http://somervillebikes.org/documents/Squares.pdf - inset maps for Davis and Union squares
http://somervillebikes.org/documents/ArtsInTheVille2011.pdf - a tour guide, with detailed descriptions and live web links for 68 art-related sites in Somerville
http://goo.gl/NpP19 - Google map of the tour

The maps indicate each site by number, and the tour guide describes each site and includes clickable URLs for most of them.

Please comment with any additions or corrections. Eventually I'd like to turn this project over to the Arts Council to include on their website.
