Hi all!

Make sure to stop by the Someville Garden Club's plant sale this Saturday, September 19 from 9am - 1pm (rain or shine). There's always a great selection of houseplants, as well as perennials, herbs, ground covers, trees, and shrubs (get there early for the best selection!). You can find garden tools, decorative containers, and horticultural books, and you can get expert advice from experienced gardeners.

We'll be set up in the middle of Davis Sq, in front of JP LIcks, Boston Burger, etc.

Hi all - any recommendations for a lawn maintenance service that can handle a modest Somerville backyard (plus side yard)?
[identity profile] narya.livejournal.com
We need to get our lawn totally replanted and (ideally) maintained by someone else for the summer.  Can anyone recommend a reliable local service?

(Edited to add:  Also, any theories about how much this is likely to cost would be appreciated.  We have a big lawn by Somerville standards but it ain't much by suburban standards so it's hard to tell...)

Hey kids, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a local service that can take back some unruly, unmaintained grape vines? Thanks!

I'd like to buy a medium-sized and relatively healthy potted aloe plant from someplace accessible via the Red Line, the closer to Davis the better. I looked in at Brattle Square Florist, but while they did have aloes, they all looked pretty scrawny and unhappy. Any suggestions?

Hi Davis Square. I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for an arborist. I have a few trees in my yard that need pruning and the arborist I had been using has moved from the area. (Plus my Angie's List subscription expired.) Any thoughts on trustworthy tree-trimmers would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've got a fairly typical lawn over much of my relatively small (but probably big for Somerville) yard. In other areas, the weeds are winning. So, I'm looking for some help. I'm ready to replace the lawn and tear out the weeds and start over. I'd like to replace it all with something that's orderly and attractive, that adds native (or natively happy) plants and/or flowers that can look attractive year round and that will require less weekly maintenance.

The thing is, I don't know much about plants, and I'm not really interested in becoming an expert. I'd prefer to hire someone to offer suggestions for plants and layout, and help to come up with a plan. Has anyone done this and can recommend someone who can help?

Has anyone worked with - or is anyone - a good gardener? We're looking for someone to weed, plant, and trim in a few small areas. Thanks!

Yard Work?

Hi all,

Any recommendations on a person or a company to do yard work? We have a fairly small lawn, but also have bushes to trim, mulching needed, raking, etc. We are located near Powder House Sq.

Thanks!

Possibly a random question, but who is in charge of administering the community gardens in Somerville (like the one on the Minute Man path near Davis Square)?
I ask because my sister works for the Chamber of Commerce in my hometown in Pennsylvania, and someone has approached her about starting a community garden there. She was hoping to find someone that she can email to ask some questions about running of such a thing (how is insurance handled, etc.), and I said I would try to help her track down the right contact here.
Any help directing me to the right person(s) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If so, ignore this. If not, and you're interested in getting together with others to harvest and use local fruit from either your own garden or public spaces, this group looks like a lot of fun: http://leagueofurbancanners.org/about/

I'm a local field naturalist, and I'm running a short nature hike on Sunday, Sept 15 from 1-2:30 pm. The theme is Bike Path Botany! Have you ever wondered what's growing in your neighborhood? We'll wander the bike path and hear some interesting and peculiar facts about local plants. Beginners & non-botanists are welcome - you won't have any trouble keeping up. Meet in Davis Square at the Holland St. T entrance. Flyer after the jump! )

I'm looking for Mosquito Dunks or Bits (preferably Mosquito Bits) to control the fungus gnats that recently took up residence in my container garden. Are there any local stores that carry them?

http://www.tessiershardware.com/shop/wp/?product=topsy-turvy-strawberry-planter

I have 6 of these planters, never used, that I don't need. I know strawberry season is over, but if anyone wants them, you can use them next year. These are just the planters, you have to supply the soil (obviously) and strawberry plants.

PM me if interested.

I need to get some soil delivered for a raised bed but I found some places like Cambridge Bark have medium levels of led in the soil since they use local leaves and yard waste for part of the composted soil. Does anyone have tips on places with low led in their soil that deliver and aren't super expense?

I also should add since I'm near Davis I don't have a wheel barrel or an exclusive drive way so if all soil delivery ends up with soil dumped in the driveway I'm not sure that would work for my situation. Thanks for any advice you may have!

I've been using a push mower for several years but this year it doesn't seem to be working very well on some of the weeds in my yard. We've sharpened the blades but I think I need to pull the old gas mower out of the basement. The gas mower we have was left by the previous renters who said it works, but I've never used it - is there a local place to take it to get it serviced - I'm sure the gas has gummed up and the oil probably needs drained. Thanks!

Would anyone like some or all of these five California Wonder sweet pepper sprouts? I don't have room left on my balcony to foster them into adulthood, but they're heirloom and yummy/versatile and I hate to waste them. They're behind season but will fruit in August-September. Sprouted in organic potting soil. I'll be home all weekend on Bay State Avenue if anyone would like to adopt. All gone! But the topsy-turvies are still available.

EDIT: Also available for free: two 2 topsy-turvy planters, brand new in their boxes. When full and watered they weigh 70+ pounds, so make sure you have something sturdy to hang them from so you don't rip a chunk of your house out like I did.
