After a very long and enjoyable run as a moderator of the [livejournal.com profile] davis_square community, the time has come for me to pass the baton. I'm on the job market and don't expect to have as much free computer time at my new job. I'm happy to let you know that [livejournal.com profile] prunesnprisms will be taking my Moderator place as of later today. I want to thank everyone who participates in this community for helping it become as active and useful as it is today. I'll still be around as a contributing member.

[livejournal.com profile] prunesnprisms joins [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman, [livejournal.com profile] cos and [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate in community moderation. One item of note that never got proper mention is that [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate's username used to be "pheromone." She has changed it, but she's still the same Mod who you know and love.

Welcome aboard, [livejournal.com profile] prunesnprisms!

My washer broke. I called Sears because something deeply ingrained in my genetic makeup says that that's Who You Call. (Also, my washer says something like "If I break, please call Sears!")

Apparently, 'tis the season for washers to break. They are booked solidly for the next month.

Can anyone recommend a non-Sears washing machine repair person or company?

If you repair washing machines, feel free to suggest your own services. In case you do, and you're curious: it fills, and drains, but neither spins nor agitates.

I was just outside near teele square, and it smelled strongly like smoke. The smell dissipated as I got closer to Davis. I heard a bunch of fire engines, but didn't see where they were headed. Anyone know what's going on??

Howdy Davis-Square-ites,

Magpie is hiring! (Magpie is a gift store at 416 Highland Ave Davis Square and we carry handmade goods and art by local and national crafters and artists.)

We're considering a number of staffing configurations, so if you're interested and you are looking for either part or full-time, we'd love to hear from you. The candidates we are looking for would ideally be:

1. friendly and enjoy chatting with people
2. better than average with computers (we use the computer for a wide variety of purposes)
3. interested in art and crafts, or interested in learning more

Above all we want to find people who would think they would really truly enjoy working at Magpie and would put their hearts into the job! :)

We pay better than average retail wages. We're also considering hiring one person be in a managerial role and this would be mean better than our better-than-average retail wages. So if you do happen to have retail management experience, we'd love to hear from you.

Please email Emily at emily {at} magpie-store.com if you are interested in learning more. Please include what your days/hours of availability are.

Thanks for your time!

- Leah @ Magpie

(P.S. We'd rather not answer really specific questions here on LJ, so please email Emily rather than posting here. Thanks!)

Found in Davis Sq today, January 7 at approx 3:15 pm, older, large Grey kitty.  Very friendly but wants to go home.

Seems like he might have an injury or arthritis in hind legs/hips.   A Good Samaritan turned him in to Animal Control.  If you are missing a kitty that matches this description, please contact Somerville Animal Control.

If you have mountains of snow around you, the next couple of days are the days to get rid of it so you don't have to work around this the next time the snow falls. Since the temperatures are in the 40s and 50s for the next couple of days it can legally be put into the streets where it will melt much quicker.
The explicit law that allows this and gives guidance as to how you should do it is behind the cut )

UPDATE: Since I started working full time again, I've had considerably less availability for this. I average a few requests a month, but they always need it right away in the middle of a work day, which I can't do anymore. If you need notarization between 8AM and 6PM on a weekday, try any of the banks in Davis. Outside of that, you can always ask and I'll see what I can do.

Does anyone know if there is a place on the somerville website that addresses what street work is happening where and when?  I found a posting outside of my house this evening that stated that there would be emergency work done at an unspecified date and there was no parking there.  I can call 311 tomorrow to ask -- but I'm wondering if I just missed the place on the website where these things are listed.  Any help would be great!

can anyone recommend a local place that does residential laundry pick-up & drop-off?

I've started a thread on[profile] davis_meta about what we want the scope of this community to be. Comments welcome. Mentioned here to get a wider consensus. Plan to do additional topics such as off-topic posts vs. off-topic comments, when it's appropriate to start a new post, and how do most people here read the forum.
