Free Artificial Christmas Tree
Feb. 4th, 2008 11:40 amIt's that time of the year. I'll be moving before next Christmas so I don't need my fake tree anymore. It's 6 feet tall, and in excellent condition. The branches can all be removed, and the tree itself comes apart into a few sections.
It's on the corner of Russell St & Cottage Ave right now. Will reply to post when it's been removed.
Give it a good home.

Don't forget to vote tomorrow! Polls are open 7am to 8pm.
If you are not sure whether you are registered or what your status is, you can call your local city hall and find out. Some numbers for that:
Somerville: 617-625-6600
Cambridge: 617-349-4361
Boston: 617-635-4635
If you need to know where to vote, you can look here for Somerville addresses or here for anywhere in Massachusetts.
If you are voting at the Teele Square Fire Station, say hi! I am working the polls and will be there all day (excepting a couple of breaks).
[ETA: My official title is "Inspector" and it would be fabulous if visitors could address me as such, with appropriate French accent and rolled R and all. :]
( Some info about voting )
( Make your vote count: Voice your vote in our updated Primary Poll (and feel free to expand on your answer in comments) )

(Don't you hate these postings? They're always so goddamn heartbreaking. However, since I have to presume Missing, I have to write one myself.)
Abbie the Cat (aka Mr. The Cat) has not been seen in his Hall Avenue home since Sunday morning and we are very worried as to his whereabouts. An indoor cat by nature and necessity, he may have developed wanderlust and poked his snoot outside if a chance had presented itself (I don't know, I was at work all day.) At any rate he is not in any of his usual places, nor behind any interior doors behind which he sometimes finds himself and -- most importantly -- there was no change to his food dish overnight, which is the biggest indicator that he wasn't around.
He is easy to spot: he is a large, 20+ pound longhaired tuxedo cat with big eyes, big white paws, whiskers that look like Salvador Dali met a walrus, and an affectionate streak a mile wide. He will be your best friend if you are trying to eat any kind of people food. (He is especially fond ofburritos anything.)
I'm in the process of contacting Somerville Animal Control and nearby vets to see if someone brought in a large sentient throw rug. We have many neighborhood strays around, however, and some whose owners allow to roam free, so I don't know if Abbie would have been brought in when we live among the feline equivalent of Fagin's gang. However, he's also an extreme creampuff when it comes to confrontation, so he might have been chased somewhere and hurt or frightened or both. I don't know. I'm rambling at this point. I just want my buddy back.
( Mug shots here )
If you have any information please email it to my LiveJournal address or comment here or something. I'm hoping this post won't be necessary and that he'll show up safe and sound soon enough, but I also hope that in the event that he hasn't gone and hidden under a bookcase in the basement, someone else may have a lead for me. Thank you for your time, and don't forget to shop local. Or vote. Or vote local. Just don't shop for votes. Okay. Thank you.

Dell Appliance Repair
Feb. 4th, 2008 01:16 pmI posted a while back looking for a recommendation to service my washing machine. The community seemed united behing Dell's Appliance repair. I procrastinated calling for Way Too Long. But today I did. And they came today. *Same Day* and he's almost done with the work now, after showing me very clearly what part broke (boy did it break!), he had the part in his truck, gave me a quote (quite reasonable), and fixed it. I just heard it agitate! And now I hear it spin. Polite, prompt, and nice!
Dells Appliance Repair! Yay!

Wibuddy@ Diesel
Feb. 4th, 2008 03:56 pmDoes anyone routinely bring their laptop to Diesel and hold a current/monthly pass to their network?
I made a post in their little wi-buddy thing 6 months ago on the rare occasion that my laptop left my house, and people occasionally comment on that post... but I really don't want to pay 4-7$ to see what folks' commented. (its also only 2? comments, so the drive, just isn't there)
Would you be willing to look up the post and email/post the responses?

Its all terribly inefficient.

robocall: upcoming power outage
Feb. 4th, 2008 09:54 pm(Are you reading this, Tom Champion?)
Earlier tonight (5:58pm to be exact), I received a robo-call informing me that NStar will be shutting off all power to my area (I don't know what they mean by my area; I live near Magoun Square) starting around 1:00am on Tuesday Feb 5th (i.e., seven hours after the time of the robo-call). The message said that they expect power to be restored by 6:00am.
The message also said that if I had any further questions about this, I could call 311. Considering that 311 was already closed for the evening by the time of the call, that's not exactly useful.
Given that the short amount of notice was not enough for me to make alternative arrangements for the contents of my refrigerator -- and according to the USDA, food in a fridge should be considered no longer safe after power has been out for four hours and this outage is supposed to last five hours -- what are the chances that I can get the City of Somerville to pay for the replacement of all my food?
I'm pretty pissed about this in case you can't tell. A power outage of five hours, even during the wee hours of the night, is still a major deal. It should have merited AT LEAST a full 24 hours' notice. Am I wrong??

Traffic question
Feb. 4th, 2008 10:22 pmWhat does a flashing green light mean?
I know what a flashing yellow, and a flashing red light mean. But on rt 16 Between Mass Ave and Broadway, there's this flashing green, and it confuses the heck out of me.
Anyone know it's purpose?
