[livejournal.com profile] maru_mari's blue Dahon Speed D7 (picture) folding bike was stolen today from the bike racks on the Meacham Road side of Davis station.

She called Somerville police, who told her that a witness had called to report that a group of 5 black males and one hispanic male were stealing that bike. (The struck-out phrase is what the dispatcher told [livejournal.com profile] maru_mari; [livejournal.com profile] notfunny, who called, said something different.) The witness did not give her name or contact info. They forwarded the call to MBTA police, who seem to have ignored the call and not made any record of it.

If you or someone you know saw this happening or saw that bike today, we'd appreciate hearing from you, especially if you can fill in details like the time the theft happened and any other aspects of the thieves' appearance.

The bike was locked with a cable lock at about 9:30 AM, and we came back at about 11 PM to find that the lock had been cut and the bike removed. My bike, which was nearby and locked with a U-lock, was knocked over but still there.

If you see a blue folding bike around, she'd like to hear about it. She's had this one for more than a year and it has a number of quirks by which we could recognize it; the one easiest to see in passing is that the cargo cords on the rack (see picture linked above) are gone.

Okay I'm going to sound like a country bumpkin here... but before I lived in Somerville, I lived in the middle-of-nowhere New Hampshire, where if we had outgoing mail, we'd put it in our mailbox and put up the red flag. The mailman would then take said mail and put the flag down. So, I figured if I left my outgoing mail on the little hook below my now-attached-to-the-house mailbox in Ball Square, the mailman would take it. However, I've tried this a number of times now and the mailperson has just left the mail there.

According to the USPS FAQs:

Outgoing mail is picked up:
* For curbside delivery if the flag is up or if there is mail to deliver.
* For door delivery if there is mail to deliver.
* From the outgoing mail slot in a Cluster Box.

Since I receive mail literally every day, it seems like my mail should be picked up. I'm curious to find out what other people's experience with this is...?

Check out the Logan wind forecast for the next 9 days: 100% NorthWest winds. Know what that means? Planes over Davis the whole time.

Here is the logan live radar: http://www4.passur.com/bos.html

Now lets log as many complaints as we can here, it really makes a difference! http://www.massport.com/logan/airpo_noise_form.aspx

I know matters are not this simple. Clearly it's not simply a question of either/or... but, as a sort of thought experiment, I'm curious how people here would feel about the following:

A few years ago Handscom Airforce Base in Concord started opening up to commercial traffic. There was a huge push-back, both from the residents of Concord, but also from those whose interest was in the Walden Pond State Reservation, and the Minuteman National Historical Park and Wildlife Refuge. But there are commercial flights out of there now, with increased road traffic to and from the airport, etc. Periodically their license to run commercial flights, and how many, will come up for review.

*If* it was a simple matter of this or that, which would you prefer?
(Radio Buttons, because, while yes, "it depends" and "neither" (or "both") are all valid points, for the purposes of a straight opinion poll, we'll push it to an either/or anyway.)

The mysterious bowling alley in Ball Square is a mystery no longer! I slipped a note in an envelope through the mail slot at the alley, and the owner called me back the next day. His name is Butch and he was very nice, and he rents out the alley now and then for private functions. He's happy to rent to us! It's 8 lanes of candle pin, BYOB/food. So let's have a [livejournal.com profile] davis_square bowling party in January or February!

Bowling leagues have the place permanently booked every weeknight, but the alley is available for private party rental on Saturday nights. I know we don't usually do DS_LJ meetups on Saturdays, but I think this is worthy of an exception. :-) $9 a head includes shoe rental and three hours of bowling, 7PM to 10PM. They don't sell food or beverages but we can bring our own, including alcohol. Organizational details to follow. But first, we have to find a date!

Note that this poll is not an RSVP poll, just a date survey. We've eliminated the 1st week in Jan (too soon after the holidays), the 3rd week in Jan (Arisia weekend), and Valentines weekend (lots of people will be busy). I can't guarantee the alley will be available on the #1 favorite date, but lets see when the most folks could make it. Wanna bowl in Ball Square? Check off all the Saturday nights you could do it. We need a minimum of 20 people to make this happen!

Hey Kids,
'tis the season of outrageous tickets for unshovelled sidewalks. My snowblower broke last winter when the plow broke off a piece of the street and left it on my sidewalk under a few inches of snow, much to my dismay. Anyway I'm wondering if anyone knows a good place in the area that fixes snowblowers? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This morning about 7:30, I drove past 2286 Mass Ave - across from Meacham Rd and it looked the like scaffolding that had been up in front of the building had fallen. A police man was there and the scaffolding was partly in the street and looked like it landed in the parking meters.

I hope no one was hurt if in fact it fell. It's been so windy, I'm surprised it's been up so long.

I always get a little nervous about walking under those things.

I have one extra ticket for the 7:30 Illuminations tour on Saturday night. It's Trolley A, which is rumored to be hosted by Tom Champion. I'd like to sell the ticket for face value ($10) and can meet you in the City Hall lobby before the tour for the hand-off or somewhere in Davis Square on Thursday or Friday.

At the Medical Reserve Corps meeting tonight the health department team announced a flu vaccination clinic tomorrow (Dec 17) at the City Hall Annex on 50 Evergreen Avenue, Somerville, MA 02143.

They will offer seasonal and H1N1 vaccinations. You can get both at the same session. They just got approval to open it up beyond the risk groups today, everyone can get it now, and it came too late to get it on the city web site.

50 Evergreen Ave St, City Hall Annex

Tweetable form: Somerville ma: vax clinic 4-7pm (Thu Dec17). City Hall Annex. Seasonal and H1N1 both available.
