I went to investigate the noise coming from the street and there are a bunch of protesters with noise makers and drums massing in front of the synagogue on Central right off Broadway. They have signs that read "Stop greed" and something about not shopping at Shaws.

What is this about, and why are they in front of a synagogue?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to bring a few bags of my unwanted clothes to a consignment shop some time soon, and was wondering if anyone has had experiences at both Buffalo Exchange in Davis and Poor Little Rich Girl (soon to be in Union) and if so, which shop seemed to give you a better deal for your clothes.

It seems like Buffalo Exchange prices your clothes and then will give you either 50% of the total as an in-store gift card, or 30% of the total in cash. PLRG's website makes it sound like they're quite picky about what they'll buy back, but they don't mention a policy in terms of prices.

Thanks a bunch,
R

I need to get an eye exam and also a prescription for contact lenses (I wore them years ago but haven't recently). I've gone through the 'eye care' tag, and saw a lot of mixed or negative recommendations. Any strong positive reviews? I'm not considering Parelli because of the number of negative reviews associated with them and contact lenses.

There's a shiny new tattoo studio open in Davis in the little plaza by Starbucks where the printing place used to be, and didn't I neglect to make note of its name. But [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate and I went inside yesterday and met the owner and artists. We got the grand tour, and the facility is incredibly clean and professional, very friendly, and open for business. From the quote he gave me for re-inking my blackwork, the prices sound like they'll be reasonable, too. We encouraged the owner to join this LJ community, so maybe we'll see him here.

Ink for all!

The Chocolate Tarte, a new pastry shop at 199c Highland Ave. (in the group of shops near the Armory), opened yesterday. I was there for all of 2 minutes to say "welcome" and to try a yummy mini cupcake. http://www.thechocolatetarte.com

The Paul Duhamel Education Initiative, in its 14th year, will be holding its 5th annual “Walk to Keep Kids in School” walking along the Somerville Bike Path starting at Davis Square on Sunday, June 6, 2010, at 10 a.m. It will be held rain or shine and is sure to be a wonderful event. Paul Duhamel, a Somerville School Committee member, was a positive force in the community and an excellent leader in the area of drop-out prevention. The DEI works to further his efforts by supporting the Somerville Public Schools and those students who are most in need. The Initiative has awarded over $50,000 in drop-out prevention grants to Somerville teachers and also supports after-school and summer programs to support at-risk youth. Please help us better serve the children of our community! For more information, please download our flier (here) , email Duhamel.education.initiative@gmail.com, or contact Marie (617-666-0134) or Doris (617-623-3168).

The Duhamel Education Initiative meets the third Thursday of every month and hosts several annual fund-raisers. We welcome your interest and are actively looking for new members. This is a great way to support the Somerville Public Schools, meet your neighbors, and get involved with making our City a great place for all. We look forward to hearing from you!

I live near the corner of Pearson Avenue and Kidder and a grey cat has been hanging round for the past few days. My roommate remembers seeing a 'Missing Cat' flier on the bike path some time last week, but she just walked over to retrieve the flyer and it was gone. I searched through old entries on here but did not see anything reflecting this cat.

Anyways, we think it's a girl, she's a medium shade of grey (like a Russian Blue), and I would estimate her weight at around 10 pounds. If she's yours, send me a pm or an email to my roomie to priyatotaram (at) hotmail (dot) com. We fed her and she skittered away, but most likely she'll be back.
