[livejournal.com profile] davis_square is booked to bowl at Ball Square Bowling Alley on Saturday February 6th at 7:00 PM! That's the date that won the poll. We'll have the alley all to ourselves and can bring whatever food and beverages we want.

This is not an RSVP thread, just a date grab so people who want to join in can get it on their calendar. We're going to have to pony up our $9 per person a week in advance, so I'll be setting up something in Paypal for that after the new year, or I can meet up with you to collect in person.

Yay bowling!

The mysterious bowling alley in Ball Square is a mystery no longer! I slipped a note in an envelope through the mail slot at the alley, and the owner called me back the next day. His name is Butch and he was very nice, and he rents out the alley now and then for private functions. He's happy to rent to us! It's 8 lanes of candle pin, BYOB/food. So let's have a [livejournal.com profile] davis_square bowling party in January or February!

Bowling leagues have the place permanently booked every weeknight, but the alley is available for private party rental on Saturday nights. I know we don't usually do DS_LJ meetups on Saturdays, but I think this is worthy of an exception. :-) $9 a head includes shoe rental and three hours of bowling, 7PM to 10PM. They don't sell food or beverages but we can bring our own, including alcohol. Organizational details to follow. But first, we have to find a date!

Note that this poll is not an RSVP poll, just a date survey. We've eliminated the 1st week in Jan (too soon after the holidays), the 3rd week in Jan (Arisia weekend), and Valentines weekend (lots of people will be busy). I can't guarantee the alley will be available on the #1 favorite date, but lets see when the most folks could make it. Wanna bowl in Ball Square? Check off all the Saturday nights you could do it. We need a minimum of 20 people to make this happen!

I went to last night's neighborhood meeting on the subject of Sacco's Bowl-Haven and Flatbread Company. The meeting took place in Sacco's (noisy) pool hall, and lasted about an hour. On hand were JP Sacco (co-owner of Bowl-Haven), John Meehan (Flatbread co-founder), Peter Quinn (architect), Rich DiGirolamo (lawyer) and Rebekah Gewirtz (Ward 6 alderman).

Meehan proposes to convert the pool hall into a pizza restaurant seating about 125. He would keep the rightmost 10 of the current 15 bowling lanes. The leftmost 5 lanes would become a bar seating about 28 people, plus food preparation and storage areas. They will apply for a full liquor license, which could be either an existing unused license or one of several newly authorized by the state legislature in a home-rule petition. They promise to close by midnight each day, and not to request a 2 am closing in the future.

This use of an existing building is allowed as of right in the Central Business District zone. It still needs to go before the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals because the new use requires 6 more parking spaces than the (grandfathered) existing use. Since the building covers nearly 100% of its lot area, there is no possibility of providing such parking on site. The liquor license requires a public hearing before the Licensing Commission.

I found this leaflet taped to the front of Sacco's. Even though I live on Day Street, I never received my own copy of it:

I just looked at the tv listing for tonight and on Ghost Hunters (9pm, Comcast ch 62/Sci Fi Channel), TAPS investigates a bowling alley that was built in 1939. So I'm guessing that's the investigation they did at the Sacco Bowl.

A bunch of people with vans and movie cameras are outside and inside Sacco's Bowl-Haven right now. It looks like they are shooting an independent film of some kind, but nobody would talk to me. Anyone know more?

ETA: Looks like they're going to film again tonight (Wednesday 2/11) starting some time after 3 pm.

I just got off the phone with Sacco's in Davis, and they don't do bumpers. I am looking to take a 3-year-old friend of mine bowling on Wednesday, but I'm quite positive she is going to need bumpers, preschooler hand/eye coordination being what it is. :) Does anyone know of a local place that does bumpers? Driving is OK, although public transport accessible would be ideal.

Thanks!

A few days ago, I went to an event that took place in the Ball Square Bowling Alley. Apparently it can be rented out--the guy who organized the event said that when he was a kid, he rented it every year for his birthday parties.

There wasn't much of anything exciting to observe, but I took some pictures for those who are curious.

It’s a slow, tiresome Monday, so as I approach my 9th year as a Davis Square resident I have some confessions. These are "confessions" because these things make me feel like the bitch I am! My list goes to 11.

Do you have any confessions? Perhaps later in the week I’ll feel perky and refreshed and post my top 11 loves -though it will be hard to think of only 11.

1. I’ve been secretly rooting for Kick Ass Cupcakes to fail, and I’m boggled that they still survive.
2. While I like McIntyre and Moore in theory, I never use them and won’t miss them.
3. I hate Mike’s, its terrible – even with the cheap beer, I don't get the popularity of this institution - I liked it better when they were crappier inside with the old signs.
4. Chipotle has won my burrito bowl dollars, I never would have seen that coming Anna’s! Anna Anna, please forgive me!
5. While I love Deisel, I’m going less and less now that the same 5 crazy people rotate ownership of the good chairs/couches and NEVER leave.
6. I don’t miss Someday Cafe, I liked it in theory, but it was a dirty filth hole.
7. I don’t miss the junkies in front of share group on Dover St (not that all of them were junkies), but I do miss the times they would interact with the Mormons.
8. I really don’t want to see Sacco’s close, but yet I never give them any business, and I was opposed to the Community Connections Center for no other reason than I thought it was a dumb name.
9. As fiercly opposed as I was to CVS opening, I now shop there all the time.
10. I want all bars except Joshua Tree to get a 2am permit!
11. Even though it’s a lame joke I still find it funny that Store 24 is not open 24 hours, and that Bread and Butter Konvience is, but has  a weird name.

Yes, its true....

Sacco's is being sold to someone else who is going to keep it a bowling alley (as far as we know).  We are happy that it worked out for the community to keep the bowling!

The main reasons for us letting go of Sacco's were that as a smaller project of just the bowling alley without the ability to do any development, our concept just wouldnt work financially. Also, we got excited about what the larger concept could offer ..... and myself, my team and my investors have decided that its best to look for another location where we can have the square footage we need to do our concept to its fullest potential. We are hoping to find a suitable location in Davis Square.

I will keep you posted!

Trish

Feedback has been that we didnt give enough notice for the meeting. I've gotten a lot of emails from people wanting to come but not being able to make it for tomorrow. Since so few have RSVP'd Im going to reschedule with more lead time. Ill still be there to talk to those that show up, but the bigger meeting will be at a later date.  Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

I know there have been a lot of rumors and speculation  floating around about Sacco's and our plans for the property. We have been waiting to share more details because there has been a lot still in flux.  I think at this point though, its important to share in more detail our concept and what we would ideally like to do in Davis Square.

My team and I would like to invite you to come to a presentation  and discussion on Feb. 25th at the VFW Dilboy. The meeting is 7 -9 ...but we will be there at 6:30 with coffee and snacks (other beverages, including water will need to be purchased at the bar at the Dilboy).  Park in the back lot and use the back door entrance off of the parking lot.

I know its short notice....I hope you can come!!   I would really like to meet you all and would love your creative input/ feedback .  We will be having additional meetings in the future as well.

Also, please let me know if you think you can make it with a comment so i can get some idea of attendance.(We are posting to other locations, and will be flyering as well. )

Thanks!

Trish

PS. After a lot of feedback here on LJ, we are in fact changing the name ...but for ease of recognition, Im keeping the working name of "the Connections Center". :-)

Some notes from Monday's Davis Square Task Force meeting:

CARLI Fence site: 12 condos proposed .... )

Antonia's Restaurant and Ten Tables: Problems with liquor licensing ... )

Former Enterprise rent-a-car: The owner, Christos Poutihidis, did not show up for the meeting. Somoene else said that the owner does not want to have another rental car operation, and instead wants to put up a building with commercial use of the first floor and residential use on the second (and possibly more). Mr. Poutihidis also owns the house next door on Cutter Avenue, so it's possible any future development would combine the two lots.

Sacco's Bowl-Haven: Trish Blain didn't have much to report yet. She thought she had a deal to buy Ideal Engine next door, but a member of that family killed the deal. Trish will present her proposal at a public event at Dilboy VFW - Monday night, Feb. 25 at 7 pm.

Dollar Days: Blue Shirt Café is not expanding into this space. Someone said he had heard of seven possible tenants looking at this storefront.

Dover Plaza: A publisher is moving into the space vacated by Share Group. Someone at the meeting said Candlewood Candlewick Press, which is now located a short walk away on Mass. Ave. in North Cambridge.

Dahn Yoga studio: A women's fashion boutique called Suneri is moving into at least part of the space, according to a sign in the window. There is also still a For Rent sign, so it's possible the space is being subdivided.

Sushi restaurant in former La Contessa space: Should open at the end of February ("which may really mean mid-March"). The storefront renovation required more work than expected, including some environmental cleanup.

Next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Monday, April 14.

Does anyone know that the story is with the bowling alley in Ball square? Is it open to the public? Is a private function hall sort of place? With Sacco's closing in April, I'm especially interested in learning more about this place. I once tried to go there but the people bowling there at that time said something about it being private? Maybe it was a league night? (I can't recall exactly what they said- it was a few years ago) Anyway, I thought there might be someone with some knowledge of this place lurking in this group.

This week's Somerville News has an article on the upcoming spring closing of Sacco's Bowl-Haven. I mention the article here because it quotes from this LiveJournal community. It's pretty evident that the Sacco family wants to get out of the bowling business.

Reporter Elizabeth Bernardi was unable to get a response from Trish Blain, despite my best efforts to connect them to each other. Trish, if you're reading this, please let everyone know what the current plan is.
