We have a big, heavy massage armchair that's getting on in years.  The leather on the part of the armchair against your back has split.  Anyone have a recommendation on someone who might be able to come out to our house to repair this?

I am looking for work over the winter, while my bike school is on break. I do baby sitting, elder care, sewing, errands, transcribing, editing, tutoring, and cooking. I'd love to have a few steady jobs over the winter but could also do odd jobs that come along. I have a teaching certificate, first aid and CPR and play the guitar and sing. (My main gig is teaching bicycle riding: BicycleRidingSchool.org.) (617) 776-6524

The person who has been shoveling my sidewalks and short driveway for the past 5 years has moved  and I am having difficulty finding someone new.  I am looking for someone who would automatically come when it snows and come back if necessary.   I have looked on Craigslist - where I found the person last time - and at Wicked Local Somerville. Neither seemed helpful.  Any suggestions of where else I might look or any recommendations of people you have used would be greatly appreciated

We received an outrageously high quote from a major chain store to hang our flat screen TV on wall and hook up remote control in closet behind TV.  (we want to hide cord and cable box) Our electrical work is already done.  (plug on wall behind tv and plug in closet behind TV for cable box)
Does anyone know of someone (independent or small business) in our community that could do this work?  Could not find anything tagged on this.

Thanks!!

Hi Davis Square. I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for an arborist. I have a few trees in my yard that need pruning and the arborist I had been using has moved from the area. (Plus my Angie's List subscription expired.) Any thoughts on trustworthy tree-trimmers would be appreciated. Thanks.

We suspect our dryer vent needs to be cleaned out badly. Has anyone used a local cleaner that they feel like recommending? I'd like to find someone good because I think our situation may be challenging. Our dryer (and the vent) are on the 3rd floor and I'm not sure the dryer is moveable. It's wedged in so tightly into a converted closet that I suspect it's now structural.  I'm hoping for someone crafty because they'll probably need to go in via the vent.

Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Hi all,

Any recommendations on a person or a company to do yard work? We have a fairly small lawn, but also have bushes to trim, mulching needed, raking, etc. We are located near Powder House Sq.

Thanks!

Looking for recommendations for a slate roofer; other roof work posts are a bit older or don't relate to slate. Need a bit of repair and all the copper area's worked on- but also am removing the chimney so will need to patch that spot. Thank you for any info

So several large branches blew off a tree near my house & into my backyard during yesterday's storm. What is the proper procedure for getting rid of them? They're huge, and I suspect that even if I am able to cut them into smaller pieces, they won't fit in the Garden Refuse container I have. Thoughts? [not sure I tagged this correctly; mods feel free to change]

Today I went to the showroom for my local fireplace store to schedule a chimney sweep (Buchanan Fireplace in Medford) and there was a sign on the door that they have closed permanently.  Calling their number confirmed this sad fact, and their website's gone.

Thus, I need a trustworthy chimney sweep.  I have a woodstove insert, and have never had it swept since I bought the insert, so I don't know what is involved.  All I know is that the woodstove flue is overdue for a cleaning.  Are there any local tradespeople recommended by this group?  I did a search, and the "home services" tag seems to be the most relevant, but I didn't find anything obvious about chimney sweeps.

Hi all,

My wife and I just moved to Davis Square and are loving it thus far!

Any leads for a reliable snow removal service for a 3-unit condo near Davis? We have a fairly long city sidewalk (we are on a corner), a normal front walk and just a couple of parking spots (no real driveway). Also a few stairs to front and back porch.

Thanks!

Can anyone recommend an exterminator to get rid of mice in a 3 family? I've tried trapping them to no effect. Maybe they would prefer Roquefort in the traps.

Can anyone recommend someone to clean & inspect a gas furnace? I've searched the archives but not found any.

I've been using a push mower for several years but this year it doesn't seem to be working very well on some of the weeds in my yard. We've sharpened the blades but I think I need to pull the old gas mower out of the basement. The gas mower we have was left by the previous renters who said it works, but I've never used it - is there a local place to take it to get it serviced - I'm sure the gas has gummed up and the oil probably needs drained. Thanks!

I need to have my home stripped and resided, along with adding replacement windows. I wonder if anyone has a recommendation for a contractor to do this kind of work. I am also curious about what kind of materials folks may have used (wood, Hardiplank, vinyl, fiberglass, etc.).

First hand knowledge would be great but if you saw some nice work in your neighborhood and remember the contractor's name that would be great too.

Thanks.

Rant = ON.

I signed up with Sungevity, the solar power company and it recently went live. OK, they put a yard sign in front of my house, and I suppose that encourages strangers to want to talk to me. But why would someone ring my doorbell at 9:30pm on a weeknight hoping to ask me some questions about the system? It's not just me, right? That's kind of a weird thing to do, right?

If the stranger in question reads this board: Maybe you should leave a note with your phone number or email address instead? If you don't have any paper with you, well, you know where I live and you could always come back later.

Rant = OFF.

Before anyone asks, I paid about $2,900 upfront for a 15 year lease with no additional monthly payments. They also gave me a $500 iPad as a special promotion, so the net cost was more like $2,400. My thinking on lease vs. buy was that, 15 years from now, I won't want to be stuck with what will (hopefully) be very outdated technology.

I haven't gotten my first post-solar electric bill yet (it's due next week), but things look very promising. I've had the system live for 3+ weeks and I'm averaging over 100kWh/week. That should save me close to $100/month at current NSTAR rates which means the system pays for itself in 2-3 years.

And I swear this isn't why I wrote this post (really!), but if anyone is seriously interested in using Sungevity, please use my referral code when visiting sungevity.com. I think we each get $500 if you sign up. My code is 75403.

Hello again. I would like to get the outside of my house painted this spring. Looking for recommendations for contractors. I'm not sure if the existing paint contains any lead, but I'd like someone who will control the dusts and contain everything just in case it does.

Thanks!

I just read that the city is coordinating teen volunteers with senior citizens and those with disabilities who need help shoveling snow. For safety, all involved must undergo a CORI check. More from Patch: "If you are a Somerville teen, and interested in helping residents in need in return for a small stipend, please contact the Somerville Council on Aging at 617-625-6600 ext 2300 to learn more, or visit the Council on Aging page on the City website (www.somervillema.gov) to download an application." Those needing help can contact this number also to get an application for the list.

Looking for recommendations on a carpet installation company that ideally has some sort of environment where we can go look at samples and options available. We dont mind traveling a bit so it doesnt have to be local necessarily :) Thanks!

I'm wondering if people have any recommendations for someone to clean gutters. I've used AAA Sparkling Window and Gutter of Watertown for several years but I thought that it would be useful to do some comparison shopping.
