The city of Somerville's official 2013 Yard Waste Pickup Calendar and Environmental Services Guide. Yard waste pickup is weekly through April, every other week from May through October, then weekly again in November. This document also has information about monthly hazardous waste dropoff days, rain barrels, composting Earth Machines, disposal of TVs and large appliances, and other useful things.

Anyone know if Cambridge and Somerville are still doing the usual Monday trash pickups tomorrow?

I haven't found anything on the city websites about it...

The city doesn't do collections December through March.  Does anyone know where I can safely dispose of some motor oil, wood stain, and a few other things?  Already tried giving them away several times, but no takers.

Thanks!

I'm appealing a trash ticket this week (long story). Any tips from others who have done so?

Subject pretty much says it all. Trash pickup is *on* for tomorrow according to 311. I put ours out, but it doesn't look like anyone else within blocks has done so yet.

While trying to find the answer on the City's web site, I discovered schools will remain closed. Boston and Cambridge schools will be open, but a lot of others are closed, too.

As I read the regulations, city of Somerville limits trash barrels to 32 gallon size.  That's pretty small and if followed would lead to an unsightly multitude of barrels at many multifamilies.   Anecdotally it seems most people have larger barrels.  As long as you keep the barrel not full of anything too heavy, do you think it is acceptable to do a larger barrel?

Also many barrels come with the bars that would allow the truck to lift them in.  Do the trash pickup tracks have that ability?

The Somerville office of East Cambridge Savings Bank, 285 Highland Ave (at Cedar St), will hold a Community Shred Event from 3 to 5 pm this Saturday, August 25.

This is likely a long shot given how small our yards are, but if anyone is doing a landscaping project and needs some rocky type stuff to do some fill work, I have some rubble and *I will deliver*.

Alternately if anyone has any suggestions for disposal, I'm open.  City says needs to be disposed of through private means.   If I'm going to take them to a dump, I'd rather not take the stuff to a place where it is going to be mixed in with trash.

I've been living in my current household for a year now, and the previous tenant still has a large amount of belongings here, which he claims to still want. About two rooms full. It's a bit excessive.

My housemate/landlord and I are resigned to have to deal with it ourselves. We'll do the polite "Here is your final deadline" thing with the old tenant, but I'm not entirely sure what we should do when he doesn't come to get it, which he almost certainly won't. I am looking for ways for it to go away at a minimum of fuss and expense to us.

It is fairly low quality stuff—neither of us wants any of it—but a charity might make use of some of it. Are there organizations that would come and cart it away to a good home? Or should I be looking into junkmen? (Does modern society have junkmen? It sounds so Charles Dickens.) My more-benevolent-in-this-particular-matter landlord was thinking of renting storage, moving it all there, paying for the first month in cash, handing the old tenant the key and declaring the matter resolved, but that seems both time-consuming and expensive to me, not to mention I'm not convinced you can rent storage and pass it over to someone else without their cooperation.

Advice and recommendations would be most helpful.

Over the years, several of our small appliances have broken - we have a toaster oven, a couple of humidifiers, etc. Now, we are moving and I need to actually figure out how to responsibly dispose of said items. I have looked at the Somerville DPW site but am still not sure what to do with all of this junk. Any suggestions?

[EDIT] It's been taken away! Thanks, to whomever it was!

There is an old (as in, the kind that catches waves from the air, but probably less than 10 years old) tv in the stairwell of the apartment I just moved into. Nobody in the building knows its origin or wants it. It's VERY heavy. It's a biggie too, 26" diagonal.

So.

What to do with it? Someone said there needed to be a special permit and some special arrangements that had to be made to take big weird electronics.

If anyone wants it, let me know! It even has the remote!

Anyone living close to the intersection of Orchard & Beech Streets interested in accepting compost contributions from our kitchen?

We aren't in a position to have our own compost bin, but we'd be glad to have our organic waste go to a neighbor's, as long as it's close enough for us to drop off conveniently.

We had this arrangement with a neighbor in our old place, and it worked out great-- more compost for them, less trash for us!

If you're interested, contact me at <vardit (dot) samuels (at) gmail (dot) com>.

(We're considering the Bootstrap Compost option, but we'd rather keep it free and super-local, if possible)

Raccoons!

Okay. First it was snakes (they seem to have moved on) and now I apparently have a family of raccoons (mom and 3 cubs) living in the back yard, inside the crevasse between neighbors' garages. Just saw them come out at dusk. They've been hunting in my trash barrels (knocked over, bags opened, etc.). While I enjoy watching all kinds of wildlife (yeah, even the snakes), I'm looking for ways to discourage the raccoons from hanging around here since I know they can be aggressive. Ideas, anyone?

Is there a map online, or a database from which a map could be built, of where trash pickup happens each day of the week near Davis, or for all of Somerville or Cambridge?
[identity profile] mzrowan.livejournal.com
Just got an email with a link to Cambridge's new iReport app. You can use it to report a missed trash or recycling pickup, a rodent sighting, graffiti, unshoveled sidewalks (a source of past ranting here!), potholes, or problems with street/park lights. If you have an iPhone or Android phone you can download the mobile version.

Note: I have no affiliation with the city of Cambridge. I get these updates because I'm signed up for the trash/recycling newsletter. If you'd like to get them too, email recycle@cambridgema.gov.

And, yes, I feel like an idiot.

Here's the press release:
NEW YEAR’S WEEK TRASH PICKUP REVERTS TO HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
Sunday-Monday New Year’s Schedule Creates Staffing Issue for Both City and Contractor
SOMERVILLE – In a last-minute reversal of its previously announced intentions – and a citywide call on Friday, December 30th – the City of Somerville announced today that municipal trash and recycling pickup for the week of January 2, 2012 will follow a holiday schedule, with pickups occurring one day later than normal across the city.  Residents should put out their trash one day after their regular day, as is usual in a week with an official Monday holiday.  Because New Year’s Day, a national holiday, falls on a Sunday this year, the official observance of the holiday will occur on Monday, January 2nd.
“Initially, we had planned to stick with a regular pickup schedule for the first week of 2012,” said city spokesman Tom Champion.  “That’s what we announced in our earlier press release and that’s what I told residents in a citywide phone call last night.  But it has become clear that both the city and its contractor, Russell Disposal, will have significant problems staffing a pickup on Monday, the observed New Year’s holiday, so we’re going with a typical holiday pickup schedule.”
“It’s very late notice, for which we apologize.  But from a cost and operational perspective, this is the best solution,” Champion said.  “Now the challenge for the City is to get the word out in time, using all of the means at our disposal, including another citywide phone call and the information hotline.” (The City’s telephone information hotline number is 617-628-7669.)
Champion noted that, despite the City’s effort to maintain a normal trash pickup schedule during the week after Christmas, only a few residents in the Monday pickup zone put out their trash on their regular pickup day.  “Many residents will continue to assume that we’re on a holiday schedule – and now they’ll be right.  For everyone else, we offer a sincere apology for the confusion – and, of course, wish them a very Happy New Year.”
- END –
Sorry, folks.

According to a robo-call and e-mail from Tom Champion, the city will pick up trash and recycling on its usual day next week (notwithstanding the legal holiday on Monday, January 2).

ETA: Never mind! See this update

Looks like you'll get 2 chances to have your post-Christmas trash picked up this week:

http://www.wickedlocal.com/somerville/news/x1980198230/Somerville-trash-pickup-on-regular-schedule-week-after-Christmas#axzz1hUaeFUmp

The trash folks will operate on a regular schedule and then swing by the day after to get those who assumed Monday was a trash holiday.
