Just letting folks know that the Subway on Elm seems to have had some fairly major water damage. There's a sign in the window saying they'll be open next week, but there's also a STOP WORK order on the door, so not sure what's going on there.

According to a sign at 280 Elm, they will be moving to 87 Blanchard Rd. in Cambridge.

Hello.

Just an FYI about a local business closing, in case it was previously unreported here. The Consignment Galleries, on Highland, will be closing in February. They've been there since '03, and have been in business in the area since '89 (http://www.theconsignmentgalleries.com/). The owners/operators are really nice people and were recently told by their new landlord that their lease will not be renewed. Their building stretches between Highland and the bike path, and houses 8 other businesses including a dry cleaner. I spoke with the owners the other day and they said that the new owner is likely planning on eventually taking down the building and constructing anew, after the other current leases expire. In the meanwhile, short term leases will be granted in the spaces of current businesses, once their longer-term leases expire.

I bring this to the attention of DSLJ for a few of reasons:

1. If you're looking to do some holiday shopping, The Consignment Galleries is always a great spot to look for gifts, and the owners and consigners could use the income.
2. When long-time local businesses close, I think it's always of note.
3. The owners have no idea about whether they'll be able to relocate, and, being of somewhat advanced ages, are probably concerned about employment prospects and retirement security. Therefore, I've thought the DSLJ community might have ideas for them about potential storefronts where they could relocate.
4. I imagine that some users of DSLJ (I'm new) are members of the press or blogging communities. If so, I thought that the closing might warrant a piece in a local publication, given the uniqueness of the store, the charm of its owners, and the development narrative that their forced closing fits into, vis a vis Davis Square's trajectory in the past decade or more.
5. As a consignment gallery, the store offers a curated space where locals (and non-locals) can sell their goods. It's like a craigslist in the flesh, where you can inspect and hold items before buying them. I suspect that quite a few Davis Square residents or denizens earn money on the side from selling wares at the galleries. So it will be unfortunate when the galleries close, as that income will potentially be lost for those residents.

Thanks for your attention. I should note that I have no connection to the Consignment Galleries, other than as an occasional customer. I'm always impressed with the solicitude of the owners, and with the variety and uniqueness of the items they and their consignees sell.

Cheers, M

Hi,

I have heard that Pretty Things Beer Co. will be stopping production. Does anyone have information?

I just came home from McKinnon's.  I spoke with the guy in the Deli counter.  They will be sadly closing somewhere early next year.  Jan 2 earliest, but maybe into Feb or March.  The owner is 75 years old, no energy to restart.  They're not selling it, and the rent is too expensive for someone else to pick it up.

So sad.

edit, Dec 3: There's apparently a sign in the store's window saying they are not closing. There's another post in this davis square community discussing that.

The 196 Elm Street location is the only one of their four that is closing.  A sign in the window says that everythng (except gift certificates and shipping/handling) in the store is now 20% off.

Boston Globe article

"City Sports, the Boston athletic retailer that filed for bankruptcy in October, is set to be purchased by a company that will close the chain’s stores and liquidate its assets.... going-out-of-business sales would begin on Friday"

The Family Dollar on Somerville Avenue, near Conway Park, has a STORE CLOSING banner hanging outside. As far as I know, our Family Dollar in Davis Square is staying open.

The few times I've gone there, the Somerville Ave. store seemed less cluttered, better organized, and friendlier than the Davis store.

Does anyone known what happened to Salon Mia Bella (also known as Salon D'Elegance) on Mass Ave at Dover Street? I've been getting my hair cut there every few months, but when I tried going there today, they appeared to be out of business.

While not Davis Square, this is still likely of interest since I'm sure many of us are regularly in Porter Square - the Walgreens there is closing on July 30.

It will probably be a shock to few that this store failed, although I'm somewhat surprised that it failed so quickly.

A construction crew has demolished the interior wall separating Dunkin Donuts from the rest of the building. The regulars never got a chance to say goodbye.

I'll miss their $1 afternoon "happy hour" specials.

I've never been to this store, but people have repeatedly praised it in this community. So I'm bringing you the sad news that it is closing this summer.

Boston Eater.com reports that a Simon's coffee shop may be replacing the closed Kindred Tea & Tonic, next to Johnny D's.

(Kindred is the most perplexing business failure I've ever seen in Davis Square. After two and a half years of planning and construction, it sort of opened last December, only to close less than four months later.)

Hollywood Express in Porter Square, the only remaining video store in our area, is closing on June 30 according to their web site. The web site says, "A grand sale of all our film inventory is currently ongoing."

At their height, they were a full-fledged mini-chain with additional locations in Davis Square (where Buffalo Exchange is now), Central Square, and Twin City Plaza. They survived the demise of all their big-chain competitors such as Blockbuster, West Coast Video, and (similarly named but unrelated) Hollywood Video.

Stopped in to their store (corner of Highland and Willow) this afternoon and they said this was their last day. They're closing to be better able to take care of their aging parents, who founded the business.

Kindred Tea & Tonic has this notice on its website:
Kindred has suspended operation until further notice. We are seeking investors and support to continue our mission. If you would like to join a mailing list we will contact you with updates on our progress. If you are our fairy godmother please email us at mailto:info@ilovekindred.com.

Thank you for all the support you have given us these past few months. These winter storms have been brutal to all businesses, not just us. Please support your local businesses as much as you can!

(how long have they been closed? seems like they've barely been open)

Someone on Reddit is reporting that they have not answered the phone in two days, and that "ABJ is out of business. They are still hoping that a customer might buy the business, but right now the place is being cleaned out."

If anyone knows more, please post a comment. Although I've never been their customer, I get the impression that this was one of Somerville's most loved local businesses.

Radio Shack has released a list of stores they plan to close as part of their bankruptcy reorganization. The Porter Square and Harvard Square stores are listed in the "third tranche", meaning that their going-out-of-business sale will end by March 31.

The CambridgeSide Galleria and Meadow Glen Mall stores are listed in the "second tranche", meaning that they will close by February 28.

Overall, they're closing 43 of their 106 Massachusetts stores. The Central Square and Fresh Pond stores aren't listed, so they're staying open--for now, anyway.

(The three "tranches" are defined in this document.)

Announcement here. "Everything must go."

Bestsellers Cafe in Medford Square also closed, last week.
