Looking for some advice from all you wise people out there. We have a large couch--around 7' long- that we're hoping to just put out with the trash tomorrow morning (we've tried for a few weeks now to give it away or donate it but there have been no takers and we're moving on Wednesday). The couch is in good shape so we hate to have to do this but unfortunately don't have too many choices right now.

We called 311 to try to find out if it was too large for pick-up (no info on the website on size, it just says 2 furniture items per week) and the person we spoke to was unsure and thought they might charge us for it. Does anyone have any experience with this, or know if there are size limits for furniture put out with the trash?

Thanks as always!

PS: Anyone want a couch?! http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/zip/2399765884.html

Something I saw in the latest recycling newsletter from the City of Cambridge: there are now two services that do food-waste pickup (for a monthly fee), and then give you back compost (if you want it). SoilCycle covers Cambridge and Somerville; Bootstrap Compost covers "Greater Boston".

We have a plastic garbage bin that, somewhere along the way, lost its lid. We live on a block with several restaurants and a persistent rodent problem, so this is a Bad Thing.

Tags had lids that would fit our can, but wouldn't sell us one without selling us another garbage can. (We have one. Did I mention?) Further conversation revealed that this comes up pretty frequently there.

Is there anywhere remotely local that will sell us just a lid?

(It just occurred to me the potentially randy reading one could perform on the subject line. Lol!)

Dear Davis Square folks,

I've got various big clunky items sitting around mostly in various storage areas--a couple of dead TV sets, semi-dead stereo set, some furniture, etc. I really want to get rid of anything that can go before my next move and am researching various outfits such as 1-800-GOT-JUNK. (I've tried Freecycle, but this seems to be the sort of thing nobody wants except for professionals who make a living out of recycling rubbish.)

I was wondering whether any of you smart, sassy, crafty individuals have heard of locally based firms that do this kind of thing--and might potentially charge less than the big national firms.

Thanks and Happy Spring (we devoutly hope!)!

OK, actually just mildly annoyed. But still: why did you dump at least 96 Yellow Books in the lobby of our 50-unit apartment building? Is there someone we can call to make you pick them back up?

These aren't even the real Verizon Yellow Pages.

Did the Snowpocalypse or Xmas change the normal pick up schedule? Thx

Hi

This is my first Christmas with a live tree and I was just wondering if the weekly trash removal will take care of pick up, or do you need to get a special permit?    thank you........

I'm debating between hiring a plumber and DIY to replace some pipe.  The one sticking point is what to do with 15-20 feet of big cast iron pipe.  I'm pretty sure the city won't take it.  Short of hiring a dumpster or disposal company, does anyone know where I could take this?  And how much it would cost?

Thanks!

It is annoying to me that the last day for yard waste pickup (curbside) is over this week.  The leaves only finally all came down right before Thanksgiving, and me and my neighbors missed the special window to get our bags hauled away.

I looked on the City of Somerville website but don't see what to do after Saturday when we'll do our full on 2010 yard cleanup.  Does anyone know where I take these 20+ bags of leaves?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I've got a behemoth of an air conditioner, which still works, though it's missing a few buttons (you need to lift up the cover of the control panel stick something in to toggle it on or off). Thing is, it's a goddam monster, and I don't need such a large machine. I'm sick of having to beg my male friends to move it for me. So I'm either tossing it, or giving it away. If you want it, speak up (you will be responsible for moving it, naturally. Also, what's the deal in Somerville for throwing out an A/C. Can I just leave it on the curb? Any info would be appreciated.

Surely this question has been addressed here, but I can't find it. What is the correct way to dispose of a monitor? I know they won't take it if I put it out on the curb. That's how the monitor before this one ended up in the garage for 5 years (and counting).

Actually, this one works perfectly well, so if anyone wants it, it's all yours. But it's the size and weight of a dog carrier filled with bricks, so I'm guessing no one will. I just don't know the drill for scrapping it. Thanks!

Hi,
My trash can lids have disappeared... So, now I have two newish trash cans without lids. Is there any place around here that sells trash can lids?

I just went down to City Hall to try and get a cert of good standing for a contractor, and discovered $1050 in trash citations -- issued June 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, this is the first I've heard of any of them -- plus a $25 ticket for "overgrowth".

I gather the thing is to appeal trash cites in person? I'd pay one or two out of general civicness, but this seems extreme. I'm unhappy with this much escalation with no notification and no chance to remediate. Plus I think the whole thing is bogus -- I've been tagged before and we're careful about the trash.

On the plus side, the City Clerk employee was very helpful and saw to it that I got my certificate stamped anyway.

In other news, what's the deal with overgrowth? I don't have plants overhanging the sidewalk, or as far as I can tell doing anything else obnoxious. My tiny lawn is weedy, but is this a crime?

Yesterday I walked down to the Somerville DPW to get a White Goods trash sticker (hint: do not call it a White Trash sticker) and an Official Somerville Compost Bin. for our postage-stamp Ball Square garden.

Once I found my way through the comfusing little warren of corridors to the Customer Service office on the second floor, they were totally awesome! The woman behind the counter was shocked that I'd shown up without a car. I assured her that if the bin was too big for me to carry, I'd just go grab a Zipcar for an hour. She said, "Oh, no, you don't need to do that! Just come back up here and tell me, and I'll get someone to drive it over!"

The woman in the guard shack by the bins was also exceptionally friendly and good-humored.

I ended up balancing the bin on my head for most of the way back--it was indeed a bulky and awkward load, though by no means impossible for that quarter mile walk. But it's such a rarity to deal with bureaucrats who are really nice that I wanted to share the experience

hey all,
I currently live in the Somerville area, plan on moving around the end of August and I have a tone of stuff that needs to go.
I've been shopping around for trash removal people, though I am still not having much luck.
I have 2 old TV's, a poor quality pool table, one dead dell PC and a couple of monitors.
Can I get a recommendation of where I can donate or dispose of these items?
Thanks

Does anyone know if a shredding service in or near Somerville that will handle shredding a relatively small (maybe 10 lbs. of paper) amount of documents?

Due to some combination of high wind and careless garbage pickup, all our plastic garbage can lids have vanished. As far as I know, no store will sell a lid separate from the can (and Tags specifically refused to do this). Does anyone have a counterexample? I'd rather not waste time and money replacing perfectly functional garbage cans if there's an alternative.

And besides, have you ever run through the comedy of errors that ensues when you try to tell the garbage collection folks to take the can as well as the garbage? Never again, I tell you.

EDIT: RubberMaid (at least) will allow you to order just the lid via their toll free number. Call 888-895-2110, between 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. M-F. Give them the part number -- that's what they use to identify which part you're ordering -- and a credit card # to pay. Delivery in 2-3 weeks. Enjoy!

Where do Somerville residents go to dump items that can't be picked up by the weekly trash pickup, eg construction waste. There is no Somerville "dump" correct? Eg the kind of place where one's vehicle is weighed before and after. Other towns have dumps, but I think you have to be a resident to use them?

I'm not interested in paying someone to pickup (probably not cost effective) or in sneaking it into the trash.

...has anyone noticed the number of "Reminders" about street cleaning blowing down the streets? I counted 6 on my walk home from work tonight. Aside from the littering aspect, there has to be a greener way to notify residents about street cleaning than printing up full sized sheets of paper to put on all the cars parked on Somerville streets.

I didn't actually read it, just could see that it was reminding residents street cleaning begins April 1st. Does anyone know if this was executed by the city itself?
